Experience an immersive journey back to 1993 by stepping into the role of First Officer Phillip Breen of Thomas Cook Airlines, preparing for an evening departure bound for Reus, just outside Barcelona. This freeware mission, brought to you by the creator Pierre G. Shlimon, places you in the cockpit of a Boeing 737, challenging you to uphold exact departure procedures and altitude constraints while navigating classic VOR-based routes. Pilots who appreciate retro operations will find this scenario both historically evocative and technically satisfying, especially those who enjoy the nuances of older radio-navigation workflows in Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX). Thomas Cook Airlines, a familiar brand in holiday travel for decades, operated a variety of short to mid-range flights, making this 737 mission an ideal showcase of that era’s aviation practices.

Atmospheric Details from the 1990s

During the early 1990s, Thomas Cook Airlines served numerous leisure destinations with reliable Boeing 737s. This scenario focuses on emulating the feel of that period, incorporating classic checklists and navigational tasks. You can anticipate immersive radio-tuning maneuvers, essential climb procedures, and precise speed management. These elements collectively recreate the operational essence of short-haul journeys in a time when advanced glass cockpits were still evolving.

Key Steps in the Departure Phase

Initial Climb and Configuration

  • Advance the throttles to establish a positive rate of climb and follow a 259° heading immediately after liftoff.
  • Retract landing gear and gradually bring the flaps up as airspeed increases.
  • Track performance carefully by maintaining a methodical climb through designated altitude gates.

Navigation Setup and VOR Guidance

Once airborne, set Midhurst VOR (114.0) for the initial two-part navigation segment. As you approach D10.5, verify that you have climbed above 2500 ft. Then, adjust course to 177° for intercepting the next radial. Continuously manage your instruments to sustain accurate lateral guidance.

Transitioning to Ockham VOR

  • Switch to Ockham VOR and track the 177° radial while climbing.
  • Comply with all altitude restrictions at Ockham D18 and D23 (distances shown on the in-sim compass if you have it enabled).
  • Confirm appropriate climb performance to fulfill each step, ensuring no deviation from the route.

Shifting Back to Midhurst and Arrival at Bogna

When you reach Ockham D28, execute a left turn to 147° and realign to Midhurst VOR (114.00) once again. Follow the 147° radial until you get to Bogna at 10,000 ft. Throughout this mission, keep an eye on any unexpected shifts and be prepared to adjust your climb or headings as needed to maintain the planned corridor.

Author’s Note

All elements of this classic route—ranging from older instrument layouts to specific altitude blocks—have been assembled by the developer Pierre G. Shlimon. His dedication to period accuracy and attention to detail make it possible for virtual aviators to appreciate the operations and procedures that Thomas Cook flight crews relied on during the early 1990s.
