This specially crafted repaint of the classic P-51D Mustang, displaying the “Little Freddie” markings, comes as a completely free package for enthusiasts eager to experience a legendary warbird in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Originally developed by Roger Dial, then adorned by Robert Hawk, and subsequently refined by Mark Rooks, this release preserves the historic flair of this World War II-era fighter.
Refined Exterior Details
Robert Hawk’s texture work brings the “Little Freddie” artwork to life across the aircraft’s fuselage and wings. Unique insignia placement, crisp stenciling, and carefully aligned stripes all highlight the striking livery. The glossy finish emphasizes the Mustang’s elegant silhouette, and subtle color transitions further enhance the vintage feel.
Preserved Warbird Characteristics
The P-51D model from Roger Dial retains the bubble canopy design, allowing enhanced visibility of both landscape and enemy aircraft in its World War II role. In this FSX-ready variant, the iconic laminar-flow wing profile remains true to the real Mustang’s aerodynamic efficiency, ensuring swift climbs and stable high-speed flight.
Optimized Flight Dynamics
Mark Rooks’s updates ensure smooth compatibility and varied performance envelopes for users who appreciate realistic flight modeling. The distinctive torque behavior of the Mustang’s V-12 Packard-built Merlin engine (closely modeled here) delivers convincing acceleration and momentum in climbs, maneuvers, and descents.
Full Package Integration
This release presents a standalone installation that includes the base model, bringing all features together under one folder for immediate use. Users can install and fly the aircraft without relying on separate third-party downloads. The cockpit, exterior animations, and landing gear configurations function seamlessly in Microsoft Flight Simulator X, offering both novice and seasoned flyers a straightforward setup.
Honorary Collaboration
All contributors have diligently preserved the heritage of the P-51 Mustang. Roger Dial’s foundational work, Robert Hawk’s meticulous paint scheme, and Mark Rooks’s adaptation unite in a cohesive effort to deliver an authentic representation of “Little Freddie.” Their combined craftsmanship allows sim pilots to explore the historical charm of this single-seat long-range fighter within a modern simulator.

I can remember back when there were but a few perfected 51's out there for FSX. I started out with a few of these and over the last 5 years amassed a superb collection of the greatest freeware ,and payware I could of imagined. Now the FSX Weapons, The many add ons, public and private. I consider this one of the greatest things that Bill Gates could of done for the simmers. Its opened so many more endless possibilities, and for many the only way to see the world thru the eyes of the soaring eagle. Thank you Fly Away Simulations.
