Fix an MSFS World Map that won't scroll, zoom or pan by restoring map focus, resetting mouse bindings and isolating controller conflicts.
If you cannot scroll or pan the World Map in Microsoft Flight Simulator, the map usually lacks input focus, your mouse profile has lost or duplicated a binding, or another controller is continually sending an input. Click blank map space first, then test the default mouse profile with every other controller disconnected.
What should the World Map mouse controls do?
With the default mouse controls, dragging across an empty part of the World Map pans it, while the mouse wheel changes the zoom level. The wheel does not normally move the map north or south as it would scroll a web page.
Keep the pointer away from the airport information card, search field, filters and other panels. Those elements can capture the wheel or drag input instead of passing it to the map. If the controls work but the route-planning interface is unfamiliar, our guide to using the World Map and selecting a flight covers the normal workflow.
How do I restore World Map scrolling and panning?
The quickest fix is to isolate map focus, the mouse profile and connected controllers in that order.
- Return focus to the map. Close any open search results, airport cards, filters or drop-down menus. Press the normal back or cancel control once, place the pointer over empty map space and try dragging again.
- Check the physical mouse. Confirm that its wheel and primary button work outside the simulator. If dragging works but zoom does not, test another mouse or close software that remaps the wheel.
- Test the default mouse preset. Open the simulator's control settings, select the mouse and temporarily switch to an unmodified default profile. Preserve your custom preset rather than overwriting it. Our MSFS controls and keyboard reference can help when checking customised assignments.
- Disconnect competing controllers. Fully close Microsoft Flight Simulator, unplug gamepads, yokes, throttles and other optional input devices, then relaunch with only the mouse and keyboard. Reconnect one device at a time if the map starts working.
- Remove the conflicting assignment. If one controller brings the fault back, inspect its UI, cursor, pan and zoom bindings. Clear duplicate assignments and correct any drifting stick, hat switch, rotary encoder or wheel that is continually generating input.
- Disable input-remapping utilities. On PC, temporarily close controller emulators, mouse macro tools and overlays that can capture wheel or button events.
- Restart and update the simulator. A stuck map interface can survive returning to the main menu, so quit the application completely. Install the appropriate simulator updates before testing again.
Which device is causing the map problem?
The behaviour usually reveals whether the fault belongs to the mouse, another controller or the World Map interface itself.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Best test |
|---|---|---|
| Dragging works, but the wheel does not zoom | Wheel capture, mouse software or a missing mouse assignment | Use the default mouse profile and test a second mouse |
| Neither dragging nor zooming works, but menus respond | Map focus or a stuck interface panel | Close every map panel, refocus blank map space and restart |
| The map moves, zooms or snaps by itself | Drifting controller input or duplicate assignments | Disconnect all controllers and reconnect them individually |
| The fault began after creating a control preset | Changed or conflicting bindings | Switch back to the default preset without deleting the custom one |
Is the fix different in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024?
The same focus-and-controller checks apply to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, although control-setting labels and profile layouts differ between them. Do not copy a binding name from one edition blindly; identify the physical device and test its default preset in the edition you are running.
If mouse dragging also fails inside the aircraft, the problem is broader than the World Map. Follow our MSFS 2024 cockpit mouse-panning checks for input focus, mouse profiles and competing controller commands.
Do I need to reinstall Microsoft Flight Simulator?
Reinstallation is rarely the right first fix for a World Map that will not pan or zoom. Synced control profiles or an external controller conflict may remain after reinstalling, so restore the default mouse preset, isolate connected hardware and remove UI-changing add-ons before considering it.
If the map responds normally but the simulator hangs after you start the flight, that is a separate loading problem; use our flight-loading troubleshooting steps instead.
