The Douglas DC-7B in early South African Airways markings offers a historical re-creation of the epoch when SAA introduced this high-speed piston airliner to its international operations. This repaint package, meticulously developed by Andre Reimers, is designed for FS2004 (Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004) and can also be integrated with FSX once the essential base model has been installed. The original aircraft model, credited to Greg Pepper and Tom Gibson, must be acquired beforehand. You can locate that freeware DC-7B in the Fly Away Simulation library. Below, you will find detailed instructions, including configuration steps, to facilitate a seamless installation.
Historic Insight into the Douglas DC-7B
The Douglas DC-7B was widely recognized for its remarkable cruise velocity, once considered among the world’s fastest airliners powered by reciprocating engines. South African Airways (SAA) included its first DC-7B into service around 1956, thus becoming the first carrier outside the United States to utilize this advanced design. For European flights, it replaced the earlier Lockheed Constellation fleet and, more notably, it pioneered the airline’s celebrated route across the Indian Ocean to Perth. These four aircraft later served on local routes within South Africa before being retired in the mid-1960s.
The Early SAA Paint Scheme
This repaint depicts an earlier phase of the SAA livery. Rivet lines, passenger cabin windows, and subtle weathering effects all come together to honor the real-world DC-7B that flew under registration ZS-DKD. By installing this texture into your simulator, you can experience the combination of vintage color design and performance attributes that marked the national airline’s evolution in global aviation.

Prerequisites and Base Model
The freeware DC-7B base package, sometimes referred to as the United Airlines DC-7 Base Pack, is needed for the panel and sound set. This pack is often called the CalClassic DC-7 and must be installed first. Additionally, the American Airlines DC-7B Base Pack (CalClassic International DC-7B) is required to finalize a proper setup for the international variant. Both can be obtained from the Fly Away Simulation mod library. After confirming you have the core files, continue with the steps below.
Installation Steps
- Ensure you have recently installed the main CalClassic DC-7 package that contains the panel and sound elements (the United Airlines DC-7 Base Pack).
- Also confirm that you have added the International DC-7B, commonly labeled as the American Airlines DC-7B Base Pack.
- If you have other liveries already set up, back up your current aircraft.cfg file by renaming it to aircraft_old.cfg before installing. After the new installation, combine the existing livery entries with the updated aircraft.cfg.
- For FSX users, once both base packages have been installed, copy every folder in the FSX/Aircraft directory into the FSX/Simobjects/Airplanes directory, thus matching FSX’s file structure.
- Transfer the texture.saa_ZS-DKD_early folder from this download into the “DC-7B Intl” folder (whether FS9/Aircraft/DC-7B Intl or FSX/Simobjects/Airplanes/DC-7B Intl, depending on your simulator).
- Open your aircraft.cfg in the same “DC-7B Intl” folder and append the following data at the end of the [fltsim.X] entries:
[fltsim.X]

- Replace X with the subsequent number in your livery section list, ensuring no duplicates.
- Save your updated aircraft.cfg and close it.
- In the flight simulator’s aircraft selection interface, look for Douglas DC-7B South African Airways ZS-DKD – Early to verify installation.
Final Checks
With the updated textures in place, you can immerse yourself in the distinctive qualities of this early SAA DC-7B while flying in your preferred simulator environment. Enjoy the dimensional sounds, period-correct cockpit layouts, and authentic exterior appearance as you explore both short and long-haul routes.
