Red Arrows Goshawk being flown in FSX.The Red Arrows were officially formed at RAF Fairford on 1 March 1965, led by Flight Lieutenant Lee Jones, flying seven Folland Gnat aircraft. In 1966 the number of aircraft was increased to nine, and since then the classic 'Diamond Nine' formation has become the team's trademark. In 1979 the Red Arrows converted to the BAE Hawk T1's.

By the end of the 2003 season, the team had given 3750 displays in fifty-two countries.

Editorial

In the past, I’ve made it more than clear that I am no real fan of militarized aviation. However, one group who have always had my respect is the RAF. Maybe it’s because I hail from the UK, but the RAF has always been one of the military groups I’ve had a great interest in researching.

Given that the Red Arrows are such an iconic part of the RAF, I decided to pick up this FSX mod that brings the famous Red Arrows into the simulator.

Was it as good as I had hoped for?

Performance

In terms of how this version handles itself in the sky, I have to say that I am pretty damn impressed. This is a fine take on the aircraft itself, providing a glut of great special effects as well as a lot of minor details.

The cockpit was a bit of a challenge to get used to, but all of its feature are there to be used and thus it can be very easy to fly around the skies. It took a bit of getting used to, but before long I felt as comfortable flying one of these as I do when flying a larger jet (which I’m more used to these days) so, overall, it’s a very fun aircraft to fly.

Performance is excellent; now, I can do my own little remakes of the air shows that my grandfather used to take me to as a child!

Precision

Another significant part of this mod, though, is the precision and the detail found on just about every rivet and bolt. The texture work has to be credited to Mark Rooks of RDG, who done a fine job of putting together a true representation of how these should look. The colour scheme is spot on, as is the attention to detail on the positioning of logos an even on how the shine reflects from that iconic red colouring.

This is a full repaint and reworking of the T45 Goshawk & T1 Hawk put together by David Brice and David Friswell. As such, it carries their hallmarks of model quality, with scale and stability of every part of the model just right. Nothing feels out of place nor does the impressive attention to detail cause any performance lags or dips.

Overall, this is a great piece of kit and one that I think just about everyone could benefit from trying out at least once. For a fun and engaging aviation experience, I definitely recommend hopping into the cockpit of this take on the wonderful Red Arrows.

Hi, I just cannot get this to work. All I get is a grey featureless Hawk with no panels, no tyres etc. It will not load the Red Arrows livery at all. I have also tried the Hawk T1 Gloss Black with exactly the same results. The one thing I notice is that the "Panel" folder is full of "cabinet" files which are still compressed. This is not a winzip type compression and I do not know how to extract them. Please could you tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks Martin
