Editorial
Ahhh, the F-16.
As one of those truly classic flight models that everyone seems to know and love – who remembers F-16 for the SEGA Genesis? – I couldn’t wait to get this installed and tried out. The overall style of the real thing makes me feel quite hyped up so the chance to hop into the Viper and fly around in FS2004 using something a whole lot more impressive than what was available back in the heyday of the simulator was something that really interested me.
Thankfully, installation took a matter of seconds and was more or less ready to go after I extracted the files.
This is a brand new Gmax product that takes on the Viper in a very specific – and well managed – US Air Force paint style. Not only does it look brilliant and remind me of the old-school F-16s that I loved looking at so much, but it gives me easy access to an impressively managed cockpit.
The whole range of features, in fact, was one of the most impressive things I’ve seen from a free package in quite some time – there was a whole new range of sounds, animations, loadouts and graphical effects added in there for the very finest of effects. The model, by the way, has to be credited to Kirk Olsson – a fantastic job well done!
The sounds, by the way, are absolutely brilliant. If you want to feel the full force of the F-16 piercing the clouds and making its way through the skies at break neck speeds, you will certainly do so with this. The sheer power of the audio track mixed in with the cracking quality of the animations makes this an absolute no-brainer to fly around in.
Given the fact it’s so detailed and impressive when compared to even some of the F-16s I’ve flown for more modern flight simulators; it shows you just how much quality has been added into this package. It really does make such a difference to have these minor little touches of class, and inspirations from later simulators, being transported into FS2002 and FS2004
The range of loadouts that are provided, too, make it easy to customize and prepare the F-16 in the way that you had originally hoped. The virtual cockpit too is a hugely impressive addition that impressed me greatly thanks to the quality and range of options open to me – it felt really quite open for customization when other virtual cockpits have been quite sorely lacking in content.
Although there are no 2D panels included, I took the advice of the developers and included the freeware F-16 panels created by Eric Marciano. They are brilliant and work ideally with the config settings for this, making them the perfect match for one another. If you want to get the best out of this module, you really ought to pick up this supplementary package. You can get the download instructions for these panels from the text files provided with this, by the way.
Installation Instructions
Most of the freeware add-on aircraft and scenery packages in our file library come with easy installation instructions which you can read above in the file description. For further installation help, please see our Flight School for our full range of tutorials or view the README file contained within the download. If in doubt, you may also ask a question or view existing answers in our dedicated Q&A forum.
