This freeware release features a meticulously reworked Boeing 777-222 in United Airlines’ newer color scheme, originally conceptualized by Melvin Rafi, adapted for Microsoft Flight Simulator X by David Grindele, and detailed by Clemens Pieper (moox84@msn.com). It includes a refined flight model, distinctive animation features, and optional compatibility with third-party lighting add-ons. Although it retains classic elements from earlier simulator versions, it has been carefully optimized for FSX to provide dependable long-haul performance and enhanced visual fidelity.

Refined Exterior and Paintwork

The United Airlines livery is presented with an updated palette that closely reproduces the carrier’s newer brand identity. The base model by MelJet comes with accurate fuselage proportions, as well as adjustable control surfaces, and this release preserves Melvin Rafi’s attention to structural detail. The exterior textures do not include virtual-cabin images, which helps maintain smooth frame rates, while still reflecting the correct markings and logos found on United’s modern fleet.

Notable Visual Traits

  • Opening Engine Cowlings: View interior engine components by pressing Shift + E. This mechanic reveals the intricate turbine housing for maintenance role-play.
  • Jetway Integration: At participating terminals, engage the jetway attachment by using Ctrl + J, enabling a more realistic gate interface.
  • Enhanced Lighting (Optional): Support for A2A 3D Lights and Redux is prepared, creating a more dynamic illumination effect around the aircraft.

Flight Model and Handling

This Boeing 777-222 variant underwent comprehensive air file and aircraft.cfg updates to refine its behavior in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. In previous incarnations—initially crafted for FS2000 and FS2002, then partially modified for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004—some flight dynamic irregularities remained. Those have been carefully addressed here, ensuring stable climbs, appropriately balanced control responsiveness, and fuel consumption patterns that replicate real-world twinjet operation during extended transoceanic missions.

Key Aerodynamic Improvements

Smoother Altitude Transitions
Altitude hold and autopilot climbs have been recalibrated for consistent cruise-level access without abrupt pitch oscillations.
Realistic Engine Response
Throttle inputs produce more authentic thrust output changes, reflecting power curves typical of high-bypass turbofan engines.

Installation Steps

  1. Extract the included Aircraft folder into your “SimObjects\Airplanes” directory within the FSX installation path.
  2. Launch FSX and search under the MELJET manufacturer listing to locate this 777-222 variant.
  3. All necessary files are included, except A2A 3D Lights & Redux, which must be installed separately to activate advanced lighting effects.

Notes on Compatibility

This model has undergone testing exclusively in FSX environments, though its heritage traces back to FS2004. While additional compatibility with older simulators may be feasible, it has not been verified under any other platform. Developers Melvin Rafi and David Grindele have focused on preserving the original structural precision of the MelJet series while making sure it takes advantage of FSX-specific features.
