This repaint portrays the DeHavilland Chipmunk G-HDAE, specifically created for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. It requires the base freeware model from Rick Piper, which is available in the Fly Away Simulation library under the filename CHPMNK04.ZIP. Once installed, you will experience the eye-catching paintwork by Chris Brisland on this classic postwar trainer.

Background on the DHC-1 Airframe

The DeHavilland DHC-1 Chipmunk first entered service shortly after World War II and soon became a preferred choice for pilot instruction. Often referred to as the “Chippie,” it features a tandem seating arrangement, which helps new aviators receive one-on-one training. Military operators, including the Royal Air Force and several other air forces worldwide, adopted the Chipmunk for its consistent flight characteristics and trustworthy design.

Distinctive Painting Elements

This livery, designated as G-HDAE, depicts a privately owned example previously connected to the Portuguese Air Force. The repaint integrates subtle shading and weathering to accentuate rivets and control surfaces. The vivid markings, including the “shark jaws” emblem along the nose, create a striking appearance that stands out in multiplayer sessions or screenshots.

Files and Credits

Developers/Creators:
• Original model by Rick Piper
• Repaint by Chris Brisland

This package provides only the modified texture files. You must already have Rick Piper’s freeware Chipmunk installed in your SimObjects directory under Airplanes.

Setup Workflow

1. Generate a new texture folder:

  • Open your aircraft installation folder, typically found at:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\Chipmunk V3.0
  • Duplicate one of the existing texture.???? subfolders by dragging it slightly and choosing the copy option.
  • Rename your duplicated folder to texture.ghdae.

2. Extract the repaint files:

  • Unzip the contents of this download directly into your newly created texture.ghdae folder.
  • When prompted to overwrite files, confirm and proceed. This ensures that the default Chipmunk textures remain accessible if needed, while the new files replace specific areas.

3. Update the aircraft.cfg:

  • Navigate to the appropriate aircraft.cfg file, which might appear in:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\RealAir SF-260\aircraft.cfg or a similar folder path if your install structure differs.
  • Scroll to the final [fltsim.x] entry. Copy the below code block and increment x to the next available number:
[fltsim.xx]
title=Chipmunk GHDAE
sim=FSDS3 DH Chipmunk
model=T10
panel=
sound=
texture=ghdae
checklists=
kb_checklists=Chipmunk_check
kb_reference=Chipmunk_ref
atc_id_color=
ui_manufacturer="de Havilland"
ui_type="Chipmunk"
ui_variation="Private ex-Portugal AF"
atc_id=GHDAE
atc_airline=
description="Shark jaws. Skin by Chris - Eagleskinner - Brisland"
ui_typerole="Single Engine Prop"
ui_createdby="Rick Piper"
prop_anim_ratio=2.02

Editing the entry numbers in sequence ensures each variant displays properly in your simulator. This practice can reveal additional skins if you discover any mislabeled fltsim entries in the aircraft.cfg.

After these steps, launch Microsoft Flight Simulator X and select the DeHavilland Chipmunk with the G-HDAE textures. You will experience the sharp appearance and unique shark-mouth motif that sets this trainer apart on the tarmac and in the air.

Can you please tell me if your Chipmunk program is 32 or 64 bit as I am using Mountain Lion on an iMac with x-plane 10 installed which is 64 bit. If it will work ok, are different liveries available? yours G Dix
