This comprehensive package updates Tim Conrad’s original Aero L-29 jet trainer for FSX, offering a refined flight model, installer, and dedicated textures. Created by Tim “Piglet” Conrad and updated by Shane Reilly, it retains its classic Cold War design while integrating seamlessly into Microsoft Flight Simulator X. This jet served as a staple trainer in various Warsaw Pact nations (excluding Poland) and continues to fly in civil operations. Below, you will find details about installation, unique operational notes, and credits to ensure a smooth flying experience.
Jet Background
The Aero L-29, also known by its NATO designation "Maya," was introduced in 1959 by Czech manufacturer Aero Vodochody. More than 3,000 aircraft were built, and many countries adopted it for training, including Czechoslovakia, the USSR, East Germany, and others across the globe. Owing to a modest thrust rating, this platform is slightly slower than other trainers such as the T-33, but it remains highly regarded for its stable handling and adaptability. Several examples reside on civilian registries today, underlining the Delfin’s enduring appeal.
Key Features
- Full-scale model of the L-29 tailored for FSX.
- Accurate instrument panel, based on Tim Conrad’s original design.
- Additional texture sets included (with instructions to copy shared textures).
- Optional EditVoicepackX entries to enhance ATC callouts.
- Custom flight dynamics file utilizing advanced workbook methodology.
Installation Steps
- Extract the downloaded package into a temporary folder, then locate the “L-29” directory.
- Place the “L-29” folder into your FSX “SimObjects/Airplanes” (or appropriate) folder.
- If present, move any gauges from the included Gauges folder into your main FSX Gauges directory. Overwrite only if comfortable doing so.
- Copy the “l29_02,” “l29_glass,” and “l29_aircrew” textures from the base texture folder into the other livery folders (except for the Ugandan version, which has its own aircrew textures).
- Confirm that the “GaugeSound.dll” is placed in the main FSX directory, as it is required for certain custom gauges. Neglecting this may cause a crash.
Operational Notes
This jet operates with lower power than certain trainers, so adopt a gentler climb and acceleration profile. For gunsight functionality, toggle the sight switch in the 2D cockpit or click the sight glass in the VC view to activate its reticle. Carefully follow any additional instructions in the included documentation if needed.
System Testing
This model was originally tested under FS2004 with a P4 2.8 GHz CPU, 1024 MB of RAM, and an ATI 9600 128 MB graphics card at 1024x768x32. Settings for flight model realism were set to “Hard” and reflection options were enabled. Performance in FSX can vary based on hardware, so adjust your simulator’s graphics and realism settings as needed to ensure smooth operation.
Credits and Notes
