Experience commanding the legendary HMS Ark Royal in Microsoft Flight Simulator X thanks to this carefully adapted freeware package. Originally developed by Fraser Paterson and Philip Chandler of the flyingstations team, this release includes a fully pilotable model with integrated panel and sound files optimized for carrier operations. Erwin Welker has refined the configuration to make deck exploration possible, allowing simmers to appreciate various viewpoints on-board this storied vessel.
Notable High-Level Engineering
This carrier’s virtual design incorporates historic references to the real HMS Ark Royal, a Royal Navy fleet flagship that served in maritime operations. Its air wing configuration is tailored to simulate early jet-era aircraft positioning, providing fidelity when operating from the flight deck. Photoreal textures contribute to a more immersive environment, pairing well with the included ship sound repertoire (described below).
Custom textures and external detailing of HMS Ark Royal.
Technical Points Under the Hood
- Photoreal Flight Deck Panel: Offers an operational cockpit that simulates control consoles and includes functioning gauges suitable for carrier navigation.
- Adapted Sound and Air Files: Custom audio complements the air-file configuration, ensuring correct responses during embarkation and deck-based maneuvers.
- Enhanced Island and Deck Cameras: Multiple viewpoint placements let you inspect the island superstructure or observe deck workflows, essential when commanding a carrier with authenticity.
Proper Setup Instructions
To ensure everything works together properly, follow these steps in sequence:
- Place the “HMS Victorious” folder (containing panel, sound, aircraft.cfg, and .air files) into your SimObjects\Airplanes directory.
- Copy the provided Gauges contents into your main simulator Gauges folder.
- Retrieve and install the AI version of the carrier as noted in the original instructions from its creators.
- Follow the placement requirements for the AI carrier so it can appear in general AI traffic where needed.
- Transfer the Model and Texture subfolders from the AI ship to “HMS Victorious”. Be sure not to copy any sim.cfg from the AI package, since that file is only meant for AI usage.
Visual Perspectives and Deck Access
You can cycle through different vantage points with the S and A keys. The following are useful steps to activate specialized carrier viewpoints:
- S-Key
- Cycles through internal and external aircraft views.
- A-Key
- While in the aircraft-views mode, repeatedly pressing A allows you to switch to specific angles. Look for the "Buccanier on deck_Cockpit Shift 4" notice, which seats you on the flight deck behind a Buccaneer.
These perspectives capture a realistic sense of scale, replicating the feel of being stationed on a carrier’s deck.
Sound Design and Key Bindings
A variety of audio triggers can be tested in both panel and cockpit modes. Due to how Microsoft Flight Simulator X processes certain sounds, volume level may vary between view modes. Some notable control bindings:
- F8 - F5 (Flaps): Simulates cannon audio cues.
- ZZ (Autopilot Disengage): Rings the carrier’s ship bell.
- Shift+E (Exit Toggle): Activates an alarm klaxon.
- G (Landing Gear): Triggers a Typhoon horn effect.
Acknowledgment of Contributors
Special thanks go out to the original creators and contributors: Fraser Paterson, Philip Chandler, and other members of the flyingstations crew, as well as Erwin Welker for assembling the pilotable modifications. Multiple talented individuals produced the gauges, effects, and many other essential components.

FSX Features For Pilotable Carrier HMS Ark Royal It states on your web-site that it comes complete with the Base-Model, but it isn't part of the download.
I want to use it as an AI in FSX through AICarriers2.

Hi,
