Immerse yourself in the expansive desert environment of Nevada with this freeware scenery upgrade developed by Ray Smith for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. This add-on refreshes the default rendition of Reno/Taho International Airport (KRNO) and includes detailed improvements that fine-tune runway operations, gates, and ground services, offering enhanced realism and more dynamic traffic flow.
Comprehensive Airfield Layout Enhancements
Two custom BGL files are provided, each with distinct configurations. One edition activates the crosswind runway (Xwind) so all three runways can support takeoffs and landings, while the other aligns with default dual-runway usage. The author integrated extra parking positions and reworked support vehicle paths to increase the efficiency of ground movement. Moreover, additional fuel trucks and previously missing gates have been introduced to match standard airline operations more closely.
Upgraded Parking and Airline Placement
An effort has been made to assign gates in a way that reflects real-world airline usage, while preserving select legacy allocations for flight sim enthusiasts who still use specific carriers. These modifications ensure that both AI traffic and user aircraft are routed to correct parking positions and terminals.

Runway Configuration Details
The crosswind-ready version of the airport uses a technique originated by Jim Vile to create “fake runways” that enable simultaneous runway assignments. As a result, the ATIS occasionally references these extra runway entries, but they can be disregarded if you prefer a more conventional setup. Selecting the other file gives you a standard runway alignment without the simulated crosswind feature.
Installation and Use
- File Integration
- Choose either
KRNO_ADE_RS.BGL
orKRNO_ADE_CW_RS.BGL
. Copy it into your “Addon Scenery/scenery” folder within Flight Simulator X. Avoid placing both files in the folder simultaneously, as conflicts in runway usage and parking alignments can arise. - Activation in Simulator
- Launch the flight simulation software and verify the new layout is visible on the loading screens and within the main interface.
- Uninstallation
- Remove the chosen BGL file from the “Addon Scenery/scenery” folder to revert back to the default airport layout.
Additional Viewing Tips
To explore the redesigned apron and runway areas, adjust your tower view settings. Assign a key to toggle track and pan movements, allowing you to rotate the camera and experience the entire airfield from multiple vantage points.
