Enhance your virtual flights around Illinois with this detailed, freeware rendition of Greenville Airport (KGRE) in Greenville, IL, created by developer Jimmy R. Martin. Positioned near farmland and just miles east of St. Louis, this airfield scenery improves the default setting in Microsoft Flight Simulator X by adding new objects, custom lighting upgrades, and subtle refinements that replicate the airport’s real-world atmosphere.

Key Additions and Visual Refinements

  • Enhanced Lighting: Brightened runway and taxiway lights for smoother nighttime operations.
  • Static Objects: Incorporation of airport equipment and other small-scale items that add realism, from fuel trucks to perimeter structures.
  • Optimized Layout: Adjusted parking spots and aircraft stands tailored for typical general aviation traffic in the region.

Memorable Experiences and Background

The developer reminisces about renting a Cessna Skyhawk from Mark Aero Aviation, covering only the price of fuel, to shuttle aircraft components between Missouri and this very airfield. Pilots based near Greenville often dealt with unique scenarios, including unexpected parachute-packing troubles for skydiving lessons and the occasional rough engine or electrical glitch. These personal recollections mirror the authenticity sought in flight simulation add-ons.

One vivid anecdote involves returning to KGRE on a scorching afternoon and witnessing an irate skydiving instructor wrestling with a stubborn reserve chute that refused to be properly packed. Another memory highlights the challenge of an aging radio navigation system giving out above the clouds, along with a drained battery in foggy conditions on departure from a Missouri field.

An Unforeseen Journey for Church Supplies

In 1964, the author served as Minister of Music and Education at a local Baptist church and made a quick flight down to Nashville in a Cessna 172 to collect overdue Sunday School materials. Mechanical hiccups, however, caused nerve-racking backfires mid-flight. The pilot attempted to radio KMWA, only to find its main tower frequency offline due to a lightning strike. Controllers from KCGI offered assistance on 121.5 and relayed alternate frequencies where contact could be made.

Once on the ground for a cool-down, the aircraft seemed airworthy again, so the trip resumed. Nonetheless, upon arriving at Greenville, a less-than-pleased mechanic vented frustration, promptly jumped into the plane, and had a close call on takeoff. Landing with a visibly rattled expression, he admitted the aircraft needed a thorough overhaul inspection back in St. Louis.

Why Pilots Appreciate Greenville

Although KGRE may seem modest compared to busier fields, it supports local flight instruction, aircraft maintenance, and occasional skydiving. Improvements brought by this scenery pack accurately capture the tower-free ambience, the farmland surroundings, and the junction of runways frequently used by general aviation pilots. With these elements in place, this add-on enables more immersive approaches and taxi experiences, aligning seamlessly with training scenarios or recreational trips in Microsoft Flight Simulator X.
