This repaint package showcases a custom rendition of the stock North American P-51 Mustang racer included in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Developed by Chris Brisland, it features striking texture elements inspired by fictional design principles, providing a visually distinctive take on the classic warbird. Though this release contains only repaint files, it focuses on maximizing visual fidelity and is ideal for users seeking to expand their library of iconic aircraft designs in FSX.
Highlights of This Fictional Livery
The real-world North American P-51 Mustang is a legendary World War II fighter, renowned for its powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12 engine. This race-modified variant highlights an even sleeker wing structure and heightened performance, typical of Reno air racing configurations. In this repaint, Chris Brisland experimented with unique layering effects and fictional emblems, aiming to create a distinctive finish reminiscent of the aircraft’s racing heritage.
Key Technical Notes
This contribution is strictly a graphical update. The underlying airframe is part of the default P-51 Racer found in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. To access the complete aircraft, please ensure you acquire the freeware base model, available through the Fly Away Simulation mod library. Installing this repaint will supplement your simulator with an aesthetic fusion of vintage aggressiveness and modern air racing flair.
Locating the Right Directories
Once downloaded, locate your primary FSX aircraft installation path. It typically resides under:
- C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\P51_Racer
In that folder, you will find the standard directory for the stock Mustang Racer. Introduce the included textures to this folder. Make sure your extraction utility respects folder structures (“Use Folder Names” option). This step creates a Skinner texture folder under the P51_Racer directory.
Configuring the Aircraft
Adjust the aircraft.cfg
to include the newly added livery. Follow these steps:
- Open the
aircraft.cfg
(often located at: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\P51_Racer\aircraft.cfg) with a plain text editor. - Identify the last
[fltsim.x]
entry. Copy the code below and paste it after that section. - Increment
x
to the next available index (e.g., if the last entry is[fltsim.3]
, modify the new entry to[fltsim.4]
).
Use the following configuration snippet:
[fltsim.x]

description="This race-modified North American P-51D wrings extra performance out of one of the best-performing fighters of World War II. The racer's reduced wingspan provides better low-level maneuverability and reduced drag. But this race aircraft attacks the pylons at Reno not with guns, but with more than 3,000 horsepower. Its Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12 is tricked out to produce twice the power of the factory Merlin engine."
After Installation
After saving the updated aircraft.cfg
, close the file, launch your simulator, and locate the “Eagleskinner” option in your P-51 Mustang listing. Select it, start up a session in Microsoft Flight Simulator X, and enjoy the fresh aesthetic twist on this storied American fighter.
