Editorial
Having not had much experience with flying around with seaplanes in the past, I decided to grab this DO-24K Seaplane mod. It was a major update from the old CFS2 aircraft and this made me quite interested to try it out and see what kind of changes had been brought to the table.
Having now flown around for a fair amount of time in the skies with this seaplane, I can quite happily conclude that it’s a fine piece of work.
The Detail
First off, the use of 1024 x 1024 textures does a great job of making the aircraft look the part. Rather than the dull and mediocre textures many of us are used to with default aircraft, this does a good job of promoting a healthier look and style over the more banal original templates.
Given that this is an all-metal plane it’s not exactly the most exciting look and design but it’s got a really interesting look to it. The designers have done a pretty spectacular job on the model itself, getting everything well in scale and making sure it follows historical precedent.
With the add-on of the broad-beamed hull and the stabilizing sponsons you can feel like you are engaging with the real thing. The thing that impressed me most about the design was the fact that it looked so rough – this is realistic, and makes me feel like I’m flying a real aircraft instead of a pristine toy, just out of the packet.
The Performance
This flies really well, too. It comes with a really powerful three engine program so you know it’s going to carry a fair amount of ammo in the tank, so to speak. I was really impressed by the power of the aircraft and felt like I could tug it through the skies without any great problems.
The team have done a great job on making sure it flies better than any other ‘flying boat’ that I have used so far. It’s a really interesting take on the seaplane and given the boys have done such a big job on getting together all of the right facts and dynamics, it flies far more effectively than I was expecting.
I would be quite happy to use this again in the future – it carries a pretty awesome charm that can be quite hard to forget about, and gives me a really good feeling for what flying a rough-water seaplane would be like.
