From 17 - 19 September 1985, VA-46, along with other units of Carrier Air Wing 1 (CVW-1), were the first to conduct flight operations from a carrier operating inside a fjord. The USS America (CV-66) operated in Vestfjord, Norway, during this evolution.[1] The next year on April 14, 1986, as a response to terrorist actions, the squadron took part in strikes against targets in Libya. During that action, VA-46 provided air-to-surface Shrike and Harm missile strikes against Libyian radar missile sites.Beginning on January 17, 1991, the squadron took part in Operation Desert Storm, the combat operations to remove Iraqi forces from Kuwait. The squadron’s A-7E Corsair IIs participated in the first combat strike against Iraqi targets in Baghdad and VA-46 and VA-72 made the last combat sorties of the A-7 Corsair II during Desert Storm flying from the Red Sea.Upon their return from the Arabian Gulf they were decommissioned on June 30, 1991. VA-46 were the last United States Navy squadron to fly the A-7 Corsiar II.

Attack Squadron 147 was commissioned as the Navy's First A-7E Corsair II squadron on February 1, 1967 in Lemoore, California. VA-147 was the first squadron to employ the Corsair II into the Southeast Asian Conflict while deployed to the Western Pacific aboard the USS Ranger, and amassed a total of five combat deployments conducting air operations over Vietnam. The A-7E was retired following a Western Pacific, Indian Ocean deployment in February 1989, and Attack Squadron 147 was officially redesignated as Strike Fighter Squadron 147 (VFA 147) on 20 July 1989.

A-7E, BuNo 158013, NH/302, VA-22, USS Enterprise, Apr 1988, Operation Praying Mantis.

In 1988, the USS Enterprise was taking part in a skirmish with the Iranian Navy in the Straits of Hormuz to keep the Iranians from closing off the Persian Gulf from commercial traffic. In April 1988, A-7Es of VA22 and VA-94 (part of CVW-11) conducted combat operations against the Iranians resulting in several sunk vessels, and one frigate badly damaged. These combat operations were dubbed Operation Praying Mantis and were abruptly ceased when the Iranians withdrew. In the course of this action, VA-22's CO and XO 'boss birds' were painted in distinctive camouflage.
