How do I brake in Microsoft Flight Simulator on Xbox?

Ian Stephens
In short

Learn how to brake in Microsoft Flight Simulator on Xbox, release the parking brake, stop after landing, and fix missing or stuck controls.

On the default Xbox controller profile, hold X to apply both wheel brakes in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Tap X briefly at speed and hold it as the aircraft slows. Press Y and B together to toggle the parking brake; custom profiles can change these commands, so check the active bindings if they do not respond.

Xbox brake controls at a glance

The standard gamepad mapping separates temporary wheel braking from the parking-brake toggle.

Releasing X normally releases the wheel brakes. MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 can retain customised or migrated profiles, so the displayed assignment is authoritative if your controls differ. Our full Xbox button map for MSFS 2024 covers the other standard commands.

How should I brake after landing?

After touchdown, reduce thrust, maintain the runway centreline and apply the wheel brakes without holding maximum braking at high speed.

  1. Bring the throttle to idle. Trying to stop while carrying excess power makes the brakes appear weak and increases the risk of losing directional control.
  2. Use the aircraft's deceleration systems. Deploy spoilers, reverse thrust or autobrake where fitted and configured; light aircraft may have none of these.
  3. Keep straight with small trigger inputs. Use LT and RT gently rather than making large rudder or nosewheel corrections.
  4. Tap X at higher speed. Increase the duration of each press as the aircraft slows, then hold it when necessary near taxi speed.
  5. Slow before turning off. Release the brakes before adding taxi power so that you are not accelerating against them.

In many airliners, applying manual wheel brakes cancels autobrake, although the exact logic depends on the aircraft. Our landing technique and rollout guide explains where braking fits into the full touchdown sequence.

How do I release the parking brake on Xbox?

Press Y and B together to toggle the parking brake on the default Xbox profile.

It is a toggle rather than a hold command, so pressing the combination when the brake is already released will set it again. Check the cockpit parking-brake handle or brake indication before adding power. Do not use the parking brake to stop after landing; use X for normal wheel braking.

Why are the Xbox brakes not working or stuck on?

Missing, duplicated or inverted control assignments cause most Xbox brake problems in Microsoft Flight Simulator.

  1. Select the active controller profile. Make sure you are editing the Xbox controller rather than a keyboard, mouse, yoke or another connected device.
  2. Search for the brake commands. Confirm that X is assigned to the command for both wheel brakes and that the parking-brake toggle has a binding.
  3. Inspect every connected device. Remove duplicate brake assignments from sticks, triggers, throttles or pedals. A control on another device can hold the brakes on even when the Xbox controller is configured correctly.
  4. Check analogue brake axes. An inverted toe-brake axis reads full braking while the pedals are released. Correct its direction and add a small dead zone if the input flickers.
  5. Return focus to the aircraft. Close menus, toolbar panels and text fields before testing, because an open interface can intercept controller inputs.

If assignments are missing, use our guide to rebuild and customise an Xbox controller profile. When moving the stick, trigger or throttle applies the brakes, follow the checks for diagnosing brakes triggered by another flight control.

Can I get smoother braking on Xbox?

The standard X button is a digital input, so short taps provide finer control than holding it continuously.

During taxi, use small bursts of power, return the throttle towards idle and brake only as required. Riding the brakes while maintaining high power is a common cause of jerky taxiing and long stopping distances.

Can I use differential braking on Xbox?

Separate left and right braking is possible when the aircraft and connected hardware support assignments for Left Brake and Right Brake. The default gamepad command applies both brakes together; its triggers normally control rudder and nosewheel steering rather than individual toe brakes. Compatible pedals with analogue brake axes provide the most precise braking.
