A follow-me car is an airport operations vehicle that drives ahead of an aircraft, giving the flight crew a clear visual route to a stand, holding point or other ground location. In real-world aviation, it supplements ground clearances; it does not steer, tow or take control of the aircraft.
The vehicle is normally conspicuous, with flashing beacons and an illuminated FOLLOW ME sign visible from the cockpit. Its exact markings vary by airport. It is particularly useful around aprons and their vehicle-controlled operating areas, where routes may be less obvious than marked taxiways.
When is a follow-me car used?
Airports provide follow-me guidance when an aircraft needs clearer or more closely controlled routing than signs, markings and charts alone provide.
- The crew is unfamiliar with a complicated airport or parking area.
- Construction, closures or temporary routes have changed the normal taxi path.
- Visibility is poor and local low-visibility procedures permit vehicle guidance.
- The aircraft is going to a remote stand, hangar or maintenance area.
- A stand has no suitable electronic docking guidance or visible lead-in line.
- Local procedures require an escort for a particular aircraft or movement.
A crew can request a follow-me vehicle, but availability and the circumstances in which one is supplied depend on the airport.
Does a follow-me car replace ATC clearance?
No. A follow-me car provides visual guidance, while ATC or apron control retains responsibility for issuing the applicable route and movement instructions.
On a controlled manoeuvring area, both the aircraft and vehicle must be authorised to use the route. On an apron, control may pass to an apron management or ramp unit. The driver is normally trained and authorised for the relevant airport surfaces and maintains radio contact with the controlling unit.
The pilot in command remains responsible for safe taxiing, speed, braking and wingtip clearance. Following the car is not permission to cross a runway holding point, illuminated red stop bar or stated clearance limit.
How should a pilot follow a follow-me vehicle?
A pilot should positively identify the assigned vehicle, follow at a safe stopping distance and continue checking the cleared route rather than concentrating solely on the car.
- Confirm the destination: understand whether the vehicle is leading to a stand, holding point, hangar or another handover position.
- Identify the correct car: several airport vehicles may be moving nearby, so look for the illuminated sign or other identification given by the controller.
- Leave stopping room: there is no universal following distance. Allow enough space to stop if the car brakes suddenly, accounting for aircraft mass, surface condition and visibility.
- Monitor the route: cross-check signs, markings, clearances and wingtip space. Do not assume that every place the smaller vehicle can enter is suitable for the aircraft.
- Stop if anything conflicts: if the vehicle is lost, the route differs from the clearance or the car passes a stop bar, hold position and contact the controlling unit.
- Expect a handover: near the stand, the vehicle may leave and final parking guidance may come from a marshaller or visual docking system.
A mistake we see in simulation is treating the car as a substitute for situational awareness. Pilots should still know how to check an airport diagram and confirm the taxi route.

How do follow-me cars work in flight simulators?
In a flight simulator, follow-me guidance is usually an optional ground-service feature rather than a guaranteed part of built-in ATC. Simulator vehicles calculate their route from airport ground-network data. If that data does not match installed scenery, the car may take a wrong turn, pass through an object or lead towards the wrong stand. In that situation, stop following it and use the airport chart, taxi signs and assigned clearance instead.
