How does a motion platform connect to Microsoft Flight Simulator?
On PC, the usual signal chain is MSFS → SimConnect → motion software → platform controller → actuators. SimConnect provides data such as acceleration, attitude, angular velocity, airspeed and whether the aircraft is on the ground.
The motion software applies gains, limits, smoothing and washout filters before commanding the platform. A washout filter delivers the initial acceleration cue, then gradually returns the platform towards centre without the pilot noticing a large sustained movement. This matters because a platform with limited travel cannot reproduce continuous acceleration or sustained g-force.
There is no universal “enable motion” switch inside Microsoft Flight Simulator, and normal SimConnect-based systems do not require Developer Mode or the full SDK. The required driver, control application and aircraft profile come from the motion hardware manufacturer.

Degrees-of-freedom labels are not fully standardised between manufacturers. Check which physical axes the hardware actually produces, its usable travel and speed, and whether the software mixes translational cues into platform tilt.

How do you set up a motion platform in Microsoft Flight Simulator?
Set up the hardware safely first, establish the SimConnect link and then tune each motion axis from a low gain rather than loading an aggressive demonstration profile.
- Confirm exact compatibility. Check the platform’s control software supports your Windows PC edition of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 or 2024.
- Install the platform securely. Follow its payload, mounting, clearance and power requirements. Place the emergency stop where the seated pilot can reach it immediately.
- Install the control software. Add the manufacturer’s driver, controller application and firmware only as directed. Do not install the MSFS SDK merely to obtain motion telemetry.
- Select the MSFS profile. Choose the supplied Microsoft Flight Simulator or SimConnect profile and verify the correct controller and actuator configuration before arming motion.

Tuning motion cues correctly
Realistic motion comes from short acceleration cues, not from copying the aircraft’s attitude directly. The mistake we see most often is mapping bank and pitch angles one-for-one to platform angle, which leaves the rig tilted against its limits during a climb or coordinated turn.
- Pitch and roll should emphasise the onset of rotation and then wash back towards neutral.
- Surge and sway represent forward, rearward and lateral acceleration; a platform without those physical axes may approximate them by tilting.
- Heave is useful for runway bumps, turbulence and touchdown, but excessive gain turns small telemetry spikes into sharp jolts.
- Yaw should cue changes in heading, slip or tail movement rather than attempt unlimited rotation.
Large transports generally need slower, lower-amplitude cues than light or aerobatic aircraft. Tune from zero, add one effect at a time and stop increasing gain once routine manoeuvres begin reaching the platform’s travel limit.
Common MSFS motion-platform problems
- No movement: Check that the controller is armed, the correct MSFS profile is active and the motion application is receiving changing SimConnect values. A working hardware self-test does not prove that simulator telemetry is connected.
- Movement in the wrong direction: Invert the affected axis in the motion software rather than swapping actuator wiring unless the manufacturer specifically instructs it.
- Banging or repeated limit hits: Reduce gain and acceleration, then inspect the washout and clipping indicators. More travel usage does not automatically produce a more realistic cue.
- A violent kick after loading or pausing: Slew, teleportation, crashes, replay transitions and unpausing can create abrupt telemetry changes. Disable or park motion before these events.
- Delayed motion: Excessive smoothing and filtering can add latency. An unstable USB or network connection and an overloaded PC can also delay updates; fix those before raising telemetry rates.
- Controls feel as if they move away: This is characteristic of a seat mover paired with fixed desk controls. Reduce platform travel or mount the controls to the moving frame.
Can you use a motion platform with MSFS VR?
Yes, but a moving platform and VR need compatible motion compensation to prevent the virtual cockpit from appearing to drift. The tracking system can detect the headset moving relative to the room even though that movement should belong to the simulated cockpit.
Some motion and headset combinations can subtract platform movement using a moving reference or tracker; support varies by hardware and tracking method. Do not assume motion compensation is available simply because the platform and headset separately support MSFS. Leave safe clearance for the headset cable and keep the emergency stop reachable while wearing the headset.
