DCS World vs Microsoft Flight Simulator: which is best?
Choose DCS World if your priority is realistic military aircraft, weapons, sensors, combat missions and tactical multiplayer. Choose Microsoft Flight Simulator if you want civilian flying, a global world, airliners, general aviation and easier controller-based access. Neither is universally better: the deciding factor is what you want to fly and do.
Here, Microsoft Flight Simulator means MSFS 2024. The same basic civil-versus-combat distinction applies to MSFS 2020, but the older simulator lacks the newer career system and was never released on PlayStation. Our assessment of MSFS 2024's strengths and remaining drawbacks covers that version in more detail.
DCS World vs MSFS at a glance
The fundamental split is specialised military simulation versus broad civilian aviation.
| Category | DCS World | Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Main focus | Military aircraft and combat | Civilian aviation and worldwide flying |
| World | Separate regional terrain modules | Global world using streamed scenery |
| Aircraft | Small free selection; most aircraft sold individually | Broad included fleet that varies by edition |
| Systems | Detailed combat systems in full-fidelity modules; simplified modules also exist | Aircraft depth ranges from accessible defaults to detailed airliners and general aviation |
| Combat | Weapons, sensors, tactical AI, damage and mission objectives | Not designed as a combat simulator |
| Activities | Campaigns, mission editor, co-op and competitive combat | Free flight, career missions, sightseeing and civil operations |
| Platforms | Windows PC | PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro |
| Best controls | HOTAS, pedals and mouse | Gamepad, joystick or yoke; pedals optional |
Which simulator has more realistic aircraft?
DCS is more realistic for military systems and combat procedures, but realism still depends on the individual aircraft.
A DCS full-fidelity module can model switch-by-switch start-up, navigation alignment, radar modes, targeting pods, data links, countermeasures, weapons and emergency procedures. Not every aircraft has that depth: Flaming Cliffs aircraft deliberately use simplified systems and less cockpit interaction.
MSFS aircraft vary just as widely. Its better-modelled airliners and general-aviation aircraft can reproduce avionics, electrical systems, hydraulics, navigation and normal procedures in considerable detail, while simpler aircraft are intended for quicker access. Before choosing an edition, compare the aircraft included with each MSFS 2024 package.
Flight-model quality is aircraft-dependent in both simulators. DCS does not automatically win every handling comparison, and MSFS does not make every included aircraft study-level. Choose DCS for radar, weapons and military procedures; choose MSFS for civil navigation, airline operations and variety.
Which has the better world and scenery?
MSFS is the clear choice for worldwide exploration, while DCS builds bounded theatres around combat operations.
Microsoft Flight Simulator lets you fly between real-world regions without purchasing separate terrain, with streamed scenery providing the best visual result when a suitable internet connection is available. DCS maps can be highly detailed, but they have defined boundaries and some must be purchased separately.
That difference changes how each simulator feels. MSFS supports global touring and long-haul routes; DCS concentrates players, AI units and mission design inside a military theatre.
What can you do in DCS that MSFS cannot?
DCS provides the complete combat loop: detect a threat, manage sensors, employ weapons, defend the aircraft and survive the mission.
- Fly air-to-air, close-air-support, strike and suppression missions.
- Operate from land bases or aircraft carriers where the selected module supports it.
- Fly helicopters in troop support, attack and transport roles.
- Use the mission editor or join co-operative and player-versus-player servers.
- Play campaigns built around specific aircraft, maps and historical or fictional conflicts.
MSFS may offer military airframes, but it does not provide DCS-style weapon employment, tactical AI, combat damage or battlefield objectives. Conversely, DCS can be used for circuits and navigation practice, but it is not a substitute for MSFS's global airports, airline routes and civilian flying environment.
A purchasing mistake we see often is choosing an aircraft because it is famous, without considering the actual job it performs. Beyond-visual-range radar management, carrier procedures and helicopter flying demand very different controls and skills.
Which simulator is easier for beginners?
Microsoft Flight Simulator is easier for most first-time simmers because a gamepad works well, assistance settings are extensive and free flight can begin without learning combat systems.
DCS has a steeper entry point. A gamepad is possible, but sensor slewing, trim, countermeasures, communications and weapon controls quickly consume available buttons. A HOTAS is not compulsory, though it becomes increasingly valuable with complex aircraft.
The DCS base simulator is free and includes the Su-25T attack aircraft and unarmed TF-51D. Use those before buying an expensive module, and follow our practical DCS beginner setup and training sequence to avoid binding every command before knowing which controls matter.
What hardware and platform differences matter?
Platform choice can settle the comparison before aircraft or graphics enter the discussion.
DCS World is a Windows PC simulator. MSFS 2024 runs on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro. MSFS 2020 remains limited to PC and Xbox. Console players therefore need MSFS, while PC remains preferable for the widest selection of peripherals, external utilities and community add-ons.
On PC, both simulators benefit from a fast processor, capable graphics card, ample memory and an SSD. DCS can become demanding in large AI-heavy missions, multiplayer and VR; MSFS places heavy loads on dense airports, complex aircraft and streamed scenery. Use our MSFS hardware and broadband guidance when judging whether a PC is suitable, and allow extra headroom if targeting VR or 4K.
How do DCS and MSFS costs compare?
DCS is free to start but can become expensive as aircraft, maps and campaigns accumulate; MSFS requires a base purchase but includes a much broader initial fleet and world.
One detailed DCS aircraft can provide a great deal of flying without further purchases. Costs rise when a campaign or multiplayer server requires a particular map, aircraft or supporting content, so check prerequisites before buying.
MSFS editions include different aircraft and handcrafted airports, with optional add-ons available afterwards. It can also become costly if you collect detailed airliners and scenery, but those purchases are not required to access the global world.
Which one should you choose?
Choose according to the activity that keeps your attention, not a vague claim that one simulator is more realistic overall.
- Choose DCS World for fighter jets, helicopters, weapons, military procedures, mission planning, carrier operations and tactical multiplayer.
- Choose Microsoft Flight Simulator for airliners, general aviation, civilian helicopters, sightseeing, worldwide navigation, career progression and console play.
- Choose MSFS as an undecided beginner if you want broad aviation variety and the quickest route to a first successful flight.
- Choose DCS despite the learning curve if radar modes, weapons employment and mastering one military aircraft are the main attraction.
If the decision remains close, try DCS's free aircraft before purchasing a module. Complete several training missions and a simple sortie. If managing sensors and weapons feels rewarding, DCS is the better fit; if you would rather pick an airport and fly anywhere, choose Microsoft Flight Simulator.
