Which Thrustmaster HOTAS is best for PC and Xbox?

Ian Stephens
In short

Compare the best Thrustmaster HOTAS for PC and Xbox, from HOTAS One and T.16000M to Warthog, with platform traps and buying advice.

For general flight simulation on Xbox, the best Thrustmaster choice is the T.Flight HOTAS One; choose the T.Flight Full Kit X if you also want pedals. On PC, the T.16000M FCS HOTAS is the best all-round value, while HOTAS Warthog or an AVA-based modular set-up suits premium military flying.

Best Thrustmaster HOTAS controllers at a glance

These are the Thrustmaster systems we would shortlist rather than treating every similarly named model as interchangeable.

Which Thrustmaster HOTAS is best for Xbox?

The T.Flight HOTAS One is the clear Xbox choice. It is licensed for Xbox consoles, also works on PC and provides a detachable throttle, twist rudder and throttle-mounted rudder rocker. Flight Simulator and the individual Xbox game must still support flight controls; console compatibility is not guaranteed merely because a device has a USB plug.

Choose the T.Flight Full Kit X when you want pedals from the start. It packages the HOTAS One with compatible T.Flight rudder pedals, which avoids the Xbox problem of buying standalone PC pedals that the console cannot recognise independently.

The HOTAS X and HOTAS 4 use similar-looking hardware, but neither is an Xbox substitute for the HOTAS One. The platform badge on the box matters. Microsoft Flight Simulator users can check our breakdown of which controller families MSFS 2024 recognises on each platform before buying.

Which Thrustmaster HOTAS is best for PC?

The T.16000M FCS HOTAS is our default PC recommendation. Its stick and separate TWCS throttle provide more axes and practical controls than the entry-level T.Flight system, while the twist grip means pedals can be added later rather than purchased immediately.

It works well for civilian aircraft, space simulation and combat flying. Its main compromises are the long sliding action of the TWCS throttle and the limited number of buttons positioned directly on the stick grip. Once purchased, our T.16000M axis and profile set-up instructions cover the bindings that usually cause trouble.

Choose HOTAS Warthog for an A-10-style grip, dual throttles and heavier military controls. It is less convincing as a universal choice: there is no twist rudder, the stick has a strong centre force, and the layout is not designed around light-aircraft or helicopter handling. Rudder pedals should be part of the budget.

An AVA-based system is the better premium Thrustmaster route when adjustable stick mechanics and interchangeable grips matter more than buying one complete box. Confirm that the selected grip, base and throttle are compatible, and decide how rudder input will be supplied. Many premium military grips do not include twist.

Will a PC-only Thrustmaster HOTAS work on Xbox?

A PC-only T.16000M, Warthog or AVA system will not become Xbox-compatible simply by connecting it through USB. Xbox games require supported, licensed controller hardware and a profile capable of interpreting its axes and buttons.

We would not choose a controller on the assumption that an unofficial adaptor will solve this. Analogue axes, separate throttle devices and force or LED features may be missing or incorrectly translated, and console software changes can break an unsupported arrangement. For one set that must serve both PC and Xbox, buy the HOTAS One.

Do I need rudder pedals with a Thrustmaster HOTAS?

Pedals are optional with the HOTAS One and T.16000M because both provide twist-rudder control, but they are strongly recommended with HOTAS Warthog and many AVA configurations. They also make taxiing, crosswind landings and helicopter anti-torque control more natural.

  • Xbox: use pedals designed to connect through the compatible Thrustmaster HOTAS, or buy the Full Kit X. Do not assume a standalone PC USB pedal adaptor will work.
  • PC: separate USB pedals are more flexible, although the simulator may assign duplicate rudder or brake bindings automatically.
  • Limited desk or floor space: retain the stick twist and spend the budget on the better throttle or stick first.

Our guide to choosing the controls a PC flight simulator actually needs explains when pedals provide more benefit than another cockpit accessory.

How do I avoid common Thrustmaster HOTAS problems?

Most first-use problems come from the wrong platform mode, duplicate bindings or uncalibrated axes rather than a faulty HOTAS.

  1. Select the correct platform mode. Put a HOTAS One into its PC or Xbox position before starting the simulator. Reconnect it after changing modes.
  2. Connect every component before launching the sim. On PC, use a direct USB port during initial configuration so a hub is not another possible fault. On Xbox, connect the HOTAS before opening the game.
  3. Remove duplicate axis assignments. A gamepad, twist grip, throttle rocker and pedals may all be assigned to rudder. Keep one active rudder source, and check aileron, elevator and throttle in the same way.
  4. Test the full axis travel. If the cockpit throttle moves backwards, enable the simulator's reverse-axis option rather than swapping unrelated commands. Add only enough dead zone to stop genuine drift.
  5. Check firmware when detection is erratic. Xbox users may need a PC and Thrustmaster's official software to inspect or update the controller firmware.

For persistent drift, incomplete travel or an off-centre stick, follow our PC joystick calibration and dead-zone procedure before replacing the hardware.
