How do I set up MSFS yoke, throttle and pedals?

To set up a yoke, throttle and rudder pedals in Microsoft Flight Simulator, connect every device before launching the sim, select each one in the Controls settings, create separate profiles, bind the correct analogue axes, remove duplicate assignments, then test direction and sensitivity. On Xbox, all hardware must be explicitly Xbox-compatible.

Check PC or Xbox compatibility first

PC and Xbox do not accept the same range of flight controls, even when the hardware uses a standard USB plug.

How do I bind the yoke, throttle and pedals?

Bind each physical movement to an analogue axis, not to the similarly named left, right, up or down button commands.

  1. Connect and centre the hardware. Plug everything in before starting Microsoft Flight Simulator. Centre the yoke and pedals, move every lever through its full range once, and leave the toe brakes released.
  2. Check detection. On PC, search Windows for Set up USB game controllers and confirm that each axis responds. If Windows cannot see an input, MSFS will not be able to bind it. On Xbox, confirm that every component is connected through the arrangement specified for that Xbox-compatible system.
  3. Create separate profiles. Open the simulator's Controls or Controls Options screen, select each device tile and make a named custom profile. Profiles stop later changes or simulator defaults from overwriting a working layout.
  4. Show all commands. Change the command filter from assigned or essential controls to all controls. Search for the axis name, select its assignment box, then move only the control you intend to bind.
  5. Check direction and range. Use the on-screen input indicator: left yoke must command left roll, pulling back must command nose-up elevator, and pressing a toe brake must increase that brake's input. Use the axis reversal option if the indication runs backwards.
  6. Save and test. Apply or save the profile before leaving the screen. Load a simple aircraft on the ground and watch the yoke, rudder, throttle and brake animations before attempting take-off.

Correct MSFS axis assignments

The exact wording differs slightly between Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, but these are the control functions to use.

For a normal forward-only throttle, use the 0–100% axis variant where one is offered. Choose a full-range or reverse-capable assignment only when the lever has a reverse detent and the aircraft supports that arrangement.

Why are the controls reversed or fighting each other?

Reversed movement usually needs an axis inversion, while controls that fight or jump are normally assigned to more than one device.

  • Control moves only fully on or off: it has been mapped to a digital button command rather than an axis.
  • Toe brakes remain applied: invert each brake axis, then confirm that its input indicator reads zero when released.
  • Aircraft rolls or yaws by itself: check for joystick or gamepad drift and add only enough dead zone to stop the unwanted input.
  • Yoke snaps or ignores movement: search for duplicate pitch and roll assignments on the mouse, gamepad, joystick or another profile.
  • Controls move without your input: disable AI piloting or assisted-control features that are actively flying the aircraft.

On Xbox, retain the gamepad's menu and camera commands but remove duplicate flight axes if stick drift is interfering with the yoke. MSFS 2024 users can compare assignments with the standard Xbox controller layout and its flight-axis bindings.

How should I calibrate sensitivity and dead zones?

Calibration corrects missing range or an off-centre input; sensitivity settings change how quickly the simulated control responds.

If a PC device does not reach its endpoints or centre correctly in Windows, calibrate it using the supported Windows or manufacturer utility before changing MSFS curves. Owners of compatible units can follow our Saitek pedal and independent toe-brake calibration procedure.

Start with a linear response and no dead zone. Add the smallest dead zone that removes physical jitter or centre drift, then soften the sensitivity only if the aircraft remains too twitchy. How do I map a twin-engine throttle quadrant?

Bind separate levers to the engine-specific axes and do not assign the general all-engine throttle axis at the same time.

  • Bind the left lever to Throttle 1 Axis.
  • Bind the right lever to Throttle 2 Axis.
  • Repeat that pattern for separate propeller and mixture levers where fitted.
  • Use a general throttle axis instead when one physical lever should control every engine.

Create another profile for aircraft that need a different lever arrangement. This avoids rebuilding a twin-engine quadrant every time you return to a single-engine aeroplane.

Can any PC yoke and pedals be used on Xbox?

No; Xbox requires hardware designed and authenticated for the console, and a standard USB connection alone is not sufficient.

Check the compatibility of the complete chain before buying or combining equipment. A set of PC USB pedals may not work with an Xbox-compatible yoke, while pedals made for that yoke may connect through a proprietary socket and work correctly. Mixed-brand combinations should only be used when their Xbox compatibility is explicitly confirmed.
