How do I get started and play DCS World?

Learn how to get started in DCS World: choose a version, install the free sim, set up controls, fly your first mission and avoid common mistakes.

To get started in DCS World, install the free PC base simulator, choose one of its included aircraft, bind your flight controls, complete the aircraft’s training lessons, then practise in an easy single-player mission. A joystick is strongly recommended, but you do not need paid aircraft, pedals, VR or multiplayer access.

What do you need to play DCS World?

DCS World is a Windows PC simulator that benefits from an SSD, plenty of free storage and a dedicated graphics card. Check our breakdown of suitable DCS World PC hardware before downloading, particularly if you intend to use VR or detailed maps.

  • Required: a suitable PC, keyboard, mouse and an internet connection for installation, updates and initial account authorisation.
  • Strongly recommended: a joystick or gamepad with analogue pitch and roll control. A joystick with a twist rudder and throttle slider is enough to begin.
  • Optional: a separate throttle, rudder pedals, head tracking and VR. None is required for your first flights.

Keyboard flight controls technically work, but small corrections during take-off, formation flying and landing are much harder. We recommend buying no specialist hardware until you have confirmed that DCS runs acceptably on your PC.

Should a beginner install DCS World on Steam or standalone?

Steam and standalone provide the same core simulator and can use the same multiplayer servers when their builds are compatible. The main difference is how installation, accounts, updates and module purchases are managed.

EditionChoose it whenMain caution
StandaloneYou want modules and updates managed through your official DCS account.Standalone purchases cannot simply be activated as Steam DLC.
SteamYou prefer to keep the simulator and its DLC inside your Steam library.Licence transfer is not symmetrical, so do not assume every purchase can move between editions.

Decide before buying modules or installing large maps. Our detailed comparison of Steam and standalone installation explains the account and licence implications.

How do you install DCS World and make your first flight?

  1. Install the free base simulator. Use the installer for your chosen edition and allow the initial updater to finish. Our free base simulator download and installation overview covers the starting package.
  2. Launch it before adding anything else. Confirm that DCS reaches its main menu and recognises your account. Avoid installing community mods until a clean installation works.
  3. Select an included aircraft. Start with the TF-51D for a clickable, full-fidelity cockpit or the Su-25T for combat systems and weapons.
  4. Configure the controls. Open the Controls screen, select the correct aircraft and bind pitch, roll, rudder, thrust, wheel brakes and view controls. DCS stores separate bindings for each aircraft and sometimes each crew position.
  5. Begin with an airborne lesson. Use Training or an Instant Action free-flight mission rather than attempting a cold start immediately. Learn straight-and-level flight, trim, turns and landing before adding weapons.
  6. Fly a simple mission. Read the briefing, check the selected aircraft and map, then use an easy single-player sortie to practise without multiplayer pressure.

Which free DCS aircraft should you learn first?

The TF-51D and Su-25T teach different parts of DCS World, so choose according to what you want from the simulator.

AircraftBest forBeginner caveat
TF-51DClickable cockpit controls, piston-engine operation and manual flyingIt is unarmed, and tailwheel take-offs and landings demand careful rudder control.
Su-25TImmediate combat, sensors and guided or unguided weaponsIts cockpit is command-driven rather than clickable, with more keyboard or HOTAS bindings to learn.

You can learn the simulator without buying an aircraft. See what the free DCS World installation includes before spending money on a module.

How should DCS controls be set up?

Bind only the essential flight controls first, then add commands as each lesson introduces them. Copying a large control list from another aircraft usually creates confusion because cockpit functions differ between modules.

  • Check the aircraft profile: a binding made for the TF-51D will not automatically configure the Su-25T or a paid module.
  • Remove duplicate axes: DCS may automatically assign pitch, roll or throttle to several connected controllers. Clear unwanted assignments if the aircraft moves without your input.
  • Use Axis Tune carefully: add a small dead zone only for a noisy or drifting controller. If a throttle operates backwards, use the axis inversion option.
  • Test from an air start: an aircraft sitting cold and dark may ignore some inputs because its engines, electrical system or hydraulics are not operating.
  • Keep view controls accessible: cockpit visibility matters in DCS. Bind view movement, zoom and recentring even if you plan to add head tracking later.

Do you need to buy a DCS module?

No paid module is required to start playing DCS World. Buy one only after deciding which aircraft type and level of cockpit simulation you want to study.

Full-fidelity modules generally model clickable cockpits and detailed start-up, navigation and weapon procedures. Less complex aircraft use more abstracted controls while retaining serious flight and combat modelling. Also check prerequisites: a campaign can require a particular aircraft and terrain, while a multiplayer mission on a paid map requires that map to be installed.

Why is DCS World not responding to your controls?

The usual cause is an incorrect aircraft profile or several devices controlling the same axis. A mistake we see constantly is configuring a joystick under one aircraft, loading another, then assuming DCS has lost the bindings.

  • Confirm that the correct aircraft and crew position are selected in the Controls screen.
  • Move each controller and watch for duplicate pitch, roll, rudder or throttle inputs.
  • Check that the mission is not paused and that the controller was connected before DCS started.
  • Use an airborne mission to separate binding problems from cold-start or hydraulic-system problems.
  • Temporarily remove mods if controls, menus or multiplayer integrity checks behave unexpectedly.

When should you try DCS multiplayer?

Try multiplayer after you can start or operate your chosen aircraft, taxi safely, take off, follow basic navigation and land without external assistance. Joining a server does not require ownership of every aircraft present, but you must own the aircraft slot you select and the terrain used by the mission.

Read the mission briefing and server rules before spawning. Modified core files can fail an integrity check, and some servers require specific community content. Practising the same aircraft offline first prevents control, radio and navigation problems from becoming other players’ problem as well as yours.
