Why is my mouse not working in MSFS 2020?

In short

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 mouse not working? Fix lost focus, control profiles, cockpit interaction, device conflicts and add-ons.

In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, a dead mouse usually means the simulator has lost window focus, the wrong Mouse control profile is active, a binding or cockpit-interaction mode is blocking clicks, or an add-on is intercepting input. Restore focus first, then verify the Mouse profile, interaction setting and conflicting devices in that order.

What kind of mouse failure do you have?

The point at which the mouse stops working usually identifies the cause.

How do I fix an unresponsive mouse in MSFS 2020?

Most unresponsive mouse problems can be fixed without reinstalling Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020.

  1. Restore simulator focus. Press Esc, alt-tab to another application and then return to the simulator. Click inside the main flight window rather than a detached instrument or secondary display. If necessary, switch between windowed and full-screen display modes.
  2. Rule out the physical mouse. Confirm that it works elsewhere, replace or recharge its battery, and reconnect it after fully closing the simulator. On PC, try a direct USB port rather than a hub. On Xbox, quit the game completely, attach the USB mouse and restart it rather than relying on Quick Resume.
  3. Select the Mouse device profile. Open Controls Options, select the Mouse device and check which preset is active. A blank or damaged custom preset can leave menu pointing intact while removing cockpit actions. Our control-profile troubleshooting process explains how to select the correct device, inspect assigned inputs and find duplicates.
  4. Check cockpit interaction mode. Under the simulator's Accessibility options, find Cockpit Interaction System and switch between Legacy and Lock. Apply and save the change before testing. These modes operate knobs, switches and displays differently, so a changed setting can make familiar controls appear unresponsive.
  5. Release captured camera input. Close toolbar panels and pop-out windows, release any held right or middle mouse button, and turn off freelook. A camera command or modal panel can capture movement and clicks even though the pointer remains visible.
  6. Disconnect competing controllers. Temporarily leave only the mouse and keyboard attached. If the mouse starts working, reconnect the controller, yoke, throttle and other devices one at a time. Remove duplicate cursor, camera or cockpit-interaction assignments from the device that triggers the fault.
  7. Test the default Mouse preset. Restore the default preset or create a clean profile rather than deleting every device configuration. If profile corruption is suspected, follow our method for resetting bindings without losing more settings than necessary.
  8. Isolate aircraft and add-ons. Test a default aircraft at a simple airport with the Community folder temporarily emptied. Use Safe Mode if the simulator offers it after an abnormal exit. If the mouse then works, restore add-ons in small groups until the faulty aircraft, panel or utility is identified.

Only repair or verify the simulator installation after the mouse still fails in menus and a default cockpit with a default profile, no competing peripherals and no Community add-ons. Avoid using an application-reset option casually because it can remove local settings or require content to be downloaded again.

Why can I click controls but not steer with the mouse?

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 treats cockpit pointing and aircraft control as separate input functions.

The standard mouse configuration is primarily for menus, cockpit interaction and camera movement. It does not automatically behave like a yoke. To fly with mouse movement, assign the appropriate Mouse X and Mouse Y axes and remove any camera assignments that conflict with them; our mouse-yoke configuration instructions cover those bindings and their limitations.

Choose mouse flight axes when no joystick or controller is available. Keep the mouse dedicated to cockpit interaction when you already have a yoke, stick or gamepad, as switching constantly between pointing and flight control is awkward during approaches.

What if only G1000 or FMS controls do not respond?

If ordinary cockpit switches work but one G1000, FMS or touchscreen does not, the mouse itself is probably not the fault.

Check that the aircraft's battery, avionics and relevant display are powered, then test the same control in another default aircraft. A modified aircraft, avionics package or incompatible panel add-on can affect individual knobs and touch fields. For failures confined to glass-cockpit equipment, use our checks for unresponsive G1000 and FMS controls rather than resetting the entire mouse configuration.
