Why is the VR mouse not working in MSFS 2024?

Ian Stephens
In short

MSFS 2024 VR mouse not working? Restore focus, reset mouse bindings, stop controller conflicts and rebuild the OpenXR session step by step.

In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, a missing or unresponsive VR mouse is usually caused by the simulator window losing focus, a damaged or empty mouse control profile, another VR pointer taking control, or a failed OpenXR session. Refocus the game, reset the mouse profile, remove competing inputs, then restart VR.

Fix the MSFS 2024 VR mouse in this order

We recommend checking focus and control assignments before changing graphics settings or reinstalling anything.

  1. Wake the cursor and restore focus. Move the physical mouse firmly in both directions. If no cursor appears, use Alt+Tab to switch away from Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, return to it, and click once inside its desktop window. Do this while paused or parked because that click could operate a cockpit control.
  2. Exit mouse-look mode. Release the right mouse button and press Esc. If the pointer works in the pause menu but disappears in the cockpit, the VR session is running; the fault is more likely a stuck camera command, duplicate mouse-look assignment or cockpit interaction binding.
  3. Cycle VR mode. Use the command assigned to toggle VR, wait for the normal 2D view to return, and then enter VR again. This rebuilds the VR interface and often restores a pointer lost after loading an aircraft, changing views or waking the headset.
  4. Reset the active Mouse preset. Open the controls settings, select the actual Mouse device rather than the keyboard or VR controller, and restore its default preset temporarily. Check that the left button, right button and wheel still have their cockpit interaction functions. Also confirm that the expected preset is active for the aircraft and control context being used.
  5. Remove competing pointers. Put the VR motion controllers down without touching their triggers. If that changes nothing, switch them off for one test and disconnect any unnecessary gamepad or input remapper. A drifting stick, held trigger or active controller ray can repeatedly take focus from the mouse.
  6. Restart the VR stack cleanly. Close MSFS 2024, restart the headset and its OpenXR runtime, make sure the headset is awake, and then launch the simulator. Temporarily disable VR overlays and move add-ons out of the Community folder if the problem began after installing or updating one.

What does the VR mouse symptom indicate?

The point at which the mouse stops working usually identifies the faulty layer.

Why can I see the pointer but not click cockpit controls?

A visible cursor that cannot operate switches normally means the pointer renderer is working but its cockpit action is unassigned or being intercepted.

Restore the default Mouse preset first. A common mistake is resetting the keyboard or VR-controller profile while leaving the Mouse profile unchanged. If MSFS offers a choice of cockpit interaction modes, test its default mode; both supported modes should accept mouse input, so changing modes is a diagnostic step rather than the real cure for a missing assignment.

If moving the mouse pans the view instead of operating controls, check for a held right button, a duplicate camera assignment or another device sending continuous look input. Our cockpit mouse-look troubleshooting covers those camera conflicts without repeating the wider VR checks.

Why does the mouse work in 2D but not in VR?

If the mouse works normally on the monitor, its hardware and basic Windows input are sound; the fault lies in VR focus, the OpenXR session or a competing VR pointer.

Confirm that VR was entered through the simulator's assigned command and that the MSFS desktop window still has focus. Our VR setup and view-control instructions explain the normal entry, focus and view-reset process.

If the complete VR interface is unstable, not just the mouse, work through the OpenXR, overlay and add-on checks for MSFS VR. When the headset never establishes a session at all, use the separate headset detection and runtime checks before editing mouse bindings.

Should I reinstall MSFS 2024 to fix the VR mouse?

Reinstallation is rarely the correct fix because it does not reliably clear a synchronised control profile, an OpenXR problem or software stealing window focus.

Before considering it, test a default Mouse preset, a default aircraft, no motion controllers, no overlays and an empty Community folder. Avoid deleting the entire simulator configuration: that can remove unrelated control and assistance settings while leaving a cloud-synchronised faulty preset ready to return.
