How do I set up Stream Deck for Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Set up Stream Deck for Microsoft Flight Simulator with hotkeys, smart profiles, SimConnect actions and fixes for input or profile-switching problems.

To set up a Stream Deck for Microsoft Flight Simulator on PC, install the Stream Deck desktop software, create a simulator profile, and map each key to an MSFS keyboard shortcut. Use a SimConnect-capable plug-in only when you need live switch states, values or aircraft-specific controls that ordinary hotkeys cannot provide.

Which Stream Deck setup method should you use?

Use hotkeys for standard simulator commands and SimConnect actions for controls or displays that need direct communication with Microsoft Flight Simulator.

MethodChoose it forMain limitation
Hotkey actionsViews, landing gear, flaps, lights, pause and other commands with keyboard bindingsCommands go to the foreground application and cannot report the actual cockpit state
SimConnect plug-inAutopilot values, radio frequencies, live indicators and direct simulator eventsCompatibility varies between MSFS 2020, MSFS 2024 and individual add-on aircraft
Multi ActionShort, predictable sequences of hotkeys with delaysIt cannot confirm that each command succeeded, so sequences can become out of step

For most new installations, we recommend building the basic hotkey profile first. Add SimConnect integration only where a normal keyboard command is inadequate.

Set up Stream Deck for Microsoft Flight Simulator

The dependable approach is to create matching profiles in the Stream Deck software and the simulator rather than modifying controls at random.

  1. Install and connect the Stream Deck. Install its Windows desktop software, connect the unit to a reliable USB port and confirm that test actions appear on the keys. The software or its background service must remain running while you fly.
  2. Create a dedicated MSFS profile. Give it a clear name and, if available, associate it with the running Microsoft Flight Simulator application as a Smart Profile. If the Microsoft Store installation prevents the software from selecting the protected simulator executable, switch profiles manually; do not change ownership or permissions on the WindowsApps folder.
  3. Make a separate keyboard preset in MSFS. Duplicate your working keyboard preset, name the copy for Stream Deck use and assign unused shortcuts to the required commands. Our walkthrough for creating custom MSFS 2024 keyboard bindings covers the simulator-side process, while this reference to the default MSFS 2024 keyboard commands helps identify controls that already have usable shortcuts.
  4. Add Hotkey actions. Drag the built-in Hotkey action onto each Stream Deck key and record the exact shortcut assigned in MSFS. Use short labels such as GEAR, AP or HDG +, and avoid Windows-reserved combinations. Re-record shortcuts locally if an imported profile uses punctuation from a different keyboard layout.
  5. Configure dials and advanced actions. On a dial-equipped model, assign clockwise and anticlockwise actions to commands such as heading increase and decrease, with the dial press used for a related function. Install a SimConnect-capable plug-in only for direct events, readouts or controls that have no reliable keyboard binding, following that plug-in's own compatibility instructions.
  6. Test and export the profile. Test every action in a parked aircraft before using it during a flight. Once it works, export the Stream Deck profile and record which MSFS keyboard preset it expects; an exported profile may retain plug-in actions without including the required plug-in itself.

A Stream Deck sending hotkeys normally appears to Windows as an input source, not as a named controller inside the MSFS controls list. Its absence from that list is therefore normal.

Build a Stream Deck profile that stays usable

A small aircraft-neutral home page is easier to operate than one crowded with every available command.

  • Keep universal functions such as views, gear, flaps, exterior lights and toolbar commands on the first page.
  • Use separate pages or profiles for airliners, general aviation aircraft and helicopters because their systems and available simulator events differ.
  • Prefer separate On and Off actions over Toggle where a plug-in supports them. Toggle commands lose synchronisation when the same switch is changed with the mouse, keyboard or another controller.
  • Use Multi Actions sparingly. They send a timed sequence without checking aircraft state, so they are poorly suited to procedures that vary with engine, electrical or avionics conditions.

A mistake we see constantly is assigning the same function through a keyboard hotkey, a SimConnect action and another controller. One press may then operate the control twice and leave it back where it started.

Why does Stream Deck not work in Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Most Stream Deck failures come from application focus, mismatched permissions, the wrong MSFS keyboard preset or a missing plug-in.

  • The key animates but nothing happens: bring Microsoft Flight Simulator to the foreground. Ordinary hotkeys are sent to whichever application has focus.
  • Hotkeys work elsewhere but not in MSFS: run both applications at the same privilege level. Windows can block a normally launched Stream Deck process from sending input to a simulator running as administrator; running both normally is usually preferable.
  • The wrong control moves or it moves twice: check for duplicate assignments and confirm that the intended keyboard preset is active. Our guide to input scanning, profiles and binding conflicts explains how to find overlapping commands.
  • The profile does not switch automatically: verify the Smart Profile application association. Packaged Microsoft Store applications can be awkward to match, so manual profile selection is the reliable fallback.
  • An imported key shows a warning or blank action: the profile probably references a plug-in that is not installed or no longer matches its expected version.
  • A detailed add-on aircraft ignores the command: it may use custom local variables or input events instead of the standard MSFS control. Use an aircraft-compatible SimConnect action or the add-on's supported keyboard binding.

Can Stream Deck display live MSFS data?

Yes, but live values and switch-state feedback require a plug-in that reads Microsoft Flight Simulator data through SimConnect or an aircraft-supported interface.

Depending on the plug-in and aircraft, a key can show autopilot targets, radio values, gear state or warning indications. Standard simulator events tend to work across more aircraft; detailed airliners often use custom variables, so a profile made for one aircraft—or for MSFS 2020—may not work unchanged in MSFS 2024.

Does Stream Deck work with MSFS on Xbox or PlayStation?

No native Stream Deck integration is provided for the Xbox or PlayStation editions of Microsoft Flight Simulator. This setup requires the Windows desktop software and, for advanced actions, PC access to SimConnect; connecting a Stream Deck directly to a console does not make it an MSFS controller.
