How do I set up VATSIM in X-Plane 12?

Set up VATSIM in X-Plane 12: choose a pilot client, install the plugin, configure audio and model matching, then fix common connection issues.
Ian Stephens

To set up VATSIM in X-Plane 12, create and activate a VATSIM account, install an approved X-Plane pilot client, configure its plugin, microphone, headset and push-to-talk key, then add traffic model-matching files. File a matching flight plan and connect from a parking stand—not a runway or taxiway.

What do I need before connecting to VATSIM?

You need an activated VATSIM account, an approved pilot client compatible with X-Plane 12, a microphone, headphones or a headset, and a push-to-talk button. Complete any required new-member orientation presented through your account before attempting to connect.

A headset is strongly preferable to speakers because an open microphone can retransmit controller audio. You should also understand basic radio phraseology and be able to control your aircraft without pausing, slewing or abandoning it on an active taxiway.

Which VATSIM client should I use for X-Plane 12?

Choose a client that explicitly supports both your operating system and X-Plane 12; old tutorials may recommend clients that are no longer approved or maintained.

ClientBest fitPoints to check
xPilotMost Windows-based X-Plane installationsUses a separate desktop client, an X-Plane plugin and CSL traffic models.
swiftCross-platform installations or users needing more detailed model-matching controlInitial configuration is more involved, so confirm operating-system and X-Plane 12 compatibility for the chosen build.

xSquawkBox and similarly old clients should not be installed merely because an older video recommends them. Approved-client status and platform support can change, so use a build identified as compatible with X-Plane 12.

How to install and configure VATSIM in X-Plane 12

  1. Activate your VATSIM account. Use the numerical member ID, often called a CID, or the account sign-in process requested by your client. A display name is not a substitute for account credentials.
  2. Install the desktop client and X-Plane plugin. If the installer requests an X-Plane location, select the root X-Plane 12 folder containing the simulator application and Resources folder. A manually installed plugin must sit directly beneath X-Plane 12/Resources/plugins/; the separate desktop application normally belongs outside that folder. Our X-Plane 12 plugin installation checks cover misplaced folders, missing dependencies and plugins that fail to load.
  3. Install compatible CSL traffic models. CSL packages provide the aircraft shapes and liveries used to represent other pilots. Add the package location to the client's model-matching settings and select a sensible generic fallback. Pointing the client one directory above or below the real CSL folder is a common reason for invisible aircraft.
  4. Configure audio. Select the actual headset output and microphone input rather than relying on the operating system's default device. Grant microphone permission if prompted, speak normally while checking the input meter, and use headphones to prevent feedback.
  5. Assign push-to-talk. Bind a convenient joystick, yoke or throttle button inside the VATSIM client. Remove any conflicting X-Plane assignment from the same button; otherwise one press may transmit while also changing a cockpit control.
  6. Check the aircraft radios. Switch on electrical and avionics power, tune the controller frequency into an active COM radio, select that radio on the audio panel and set an audible volume. The pilot client reads the simulated radio state, so tuning the correct number is not enough if it remains in standby.
  7. Prepare and file the flight plan. Use the same callsign in the client and flight plan, enter the correct ICAO aircraft type, and check the route, altitude and remarks. Filing a plan does not load it into the aircraft's FMS, and programming the FMS does not automatically submit a VATSIM flight plan.
  8. Connect from a parking position. Load at a gate, ramp or stand suitable for the aircraft, then connect and check the controller list. Listen to the ATIS before calling the appropriate controller. If no controller is online, follow the local advisory or UNICOM procedure and continue watching for other traffic.

The mistake we see constantly is installing the desktop client correctly but placing its X-Plane plugin in a second, nested plugins folder. X-Plane will not load it there. Restart both X-Plane and the client after correcting the path.

Do I need paid navigation data for VATSIM?

Paid navigation data is not required to connect, but the procedures in your aircraft should broadly match those used by controllers. An older database may lack a runway, waypoint, SID or STAR included in a clearance.

Check that a procedure exists in your FMS before accepting it. If it does not, tell the controller that you are unable and request vectors or an alternative; do not pretend to have loaded it. We explain the available options in our guide to adding SIDs and STARs to X-Plane 12.

Why can I connect but not hear ATC or see traffic?

A successful network login only confirms the data connection; voice, radio selection, the simulator plugin and traffic models can still be misconfigured independently.

Can I use VATSIM in X-Plane 12 VR?

VATSIM can be used in VR, but the desktop client window may not appear inside the headset. Assign push-to-talk and essential radio controls to physical hardware, and configure any client-supported in-simulator notifications before departure.

Test radio tuning, text messages and controller hand-offs without the headset first. Our X-Plane 12 VR configuration advice covers controller bindings and the simulator-side setup.
