How do I set up and use VR in X-Plane 12?

What do I need for X-Plane 12 VR?

You need the Windows version of X-Plane 12, a PC-compatible VR headset and the headset’s PC runtime. X-Plane runs on the computer and sends the view to the headset; it is not a standalone headset application. Laminar’s supported VR route for X-Plane 12 is Windows rather than macOS or Linux.

VR places a much heavier load on the GPU than a monitor because X-Plane must render separate high-resolution views for both eyes. Which VR runtime should I use?

Use the supported route that presents your headset correctly to your installed X-Plane build: a native OpenXR route where available, or SteamVR for SteamVR-native hardware and configurations that require it. The store from which X-Plane was purchased does not by itself determine the runtime.

Do not run several competing VR runtimes or compatibility layers during the first setup. Establish that the stock headset software works before adding translation layers, overlays or performance utilities.

How do I enable VR in X-Plane 12?

The most reliable setup order is to configure the simulator on the monitor first, start the headset runtime, and enable VR only after both are working independently.

  1. Update and test the headset. Install the appropriate graphics driver and headset software, then confirm that the PC runtime detects the headset, tracking and controllers.
  2. Configure X-Plane in 2D. Start with a default aircraft at an uncomplicated airport. This prevents a demanding add-on, plugin or scenery package from being mistaken for a VR fault.
  3. Set up physical controls. Calibrate the yoke or joystick, throttle and rudder pedals before putting on the headset. Follow our joystick setup and calibration procedure if axes are not responding cleanly.
  4. Assign a reset-view control. Search the keyboard or joystick commands for the VR view reset command and bind it to an accessible button. Reaching for the keyboard while wearing a headset quickly becomes awkward.
  5. Start the VR session. Enter the headset’s PC-link mode or start SteamVR, depending on the chosen route. A standalone headset’s normal home environment is not the same as a PC VR connection.
  6. Enable the headset in X-Plane. Open Settings > VR Hardware and select the option to enable VR hardware. If the option is unavailable, close X-Plane, establish the headset connection and then relaunch the simulator.
  7. Centre the cockpit view. Sit in your normal flying position, face straight ahead and use the assigned reset-view command. Do this after loading the aircraft, because different cockpits use different pilot viewpoints.

How do I operate the cockpit in VR?

A physical yoke or joystick, throttle and rudder pedals provide the most dependable primary flight controls, while a VR controller or mouse can operate switches, knobs and touchscreens. This also gives you tactile references that virtual controls cannot provide.

  • VR controllers: Point at a cockpit manipulator and use the controller’s selection or grab action. Exact inputs depend on the controller profile and how the aircraft author implemented its manipulators.
  • VR mouse: Enable the VR mouse option when controllers are inconvenient or an add-on cockpit does not respond properly to them. It is precise for small controls but less comfortable during hand flying.
  • Physical hardware: Map trim, brakes, landing gear, flaps and the VR view reset to buttons you can identify by touch.
  • Custom aircraft: Test a default X-Plane aircraft if switches or virtual yokes do not work. If the default cockpit is usable, the problem is probably the add-on’s VR configuration rather than the headset.

A mistake we see constantly is assigning the same axis to more than one physical device. Check the joystick settings for duplicate pitch, roll, yaw and throttle assignments if controls jump or fight each other.

How do I fix the wrong seat position or cockpit scale?

Reset the VR view while seated in the real position from which you intend to fly. If you appear too high, too low or outside the cockpit, redo the headset’s seated or floor calibration and reset the view again.

If the position is wrong in only one add-on aircraft, its VR eye point or cockpit configuration may be at fault. Do not distort global headset calibration to compensate for one aircraft.

Which X-Plane 12 VR settings should I lower first?

Lower GPU-heavy settings first when head movement judders, then reduce CPU-heavy scenery settings if performance collapses mainly around large airports. Judge changes inside the headset or with the runtime’s frame-timing display, not from the desktop mirror alone.

Avoid applying aggressive supersampling in both X-Plane and the headset runtime; the multipliers compound. Establish smooth performance at a neutral runtime resolution, then increase clarity gradually. Reprojection or motion smoothing can make a supported fraction of the headset’s refresh rate feel steadier, but it may create double images around propellers, wingtips and fast-moving scenery. Consistent frame times are usually preferable to a higher but erratic frame rate.

Why does X-Plane 12 not detect my VR headset?

X-Plane usually fails to detect a headset because the PC-link session is not active, the wrong runtime is running, or the simulator was opened before the headset became available.

  • VR Hardware is missing or unavailable: Confirm that the headset appears in its PC runtime, close X-Plane completely, start the runtime and relaunch X-Plane.
  • The monitor works but the headset is black: Restart the headset compositor and check that a display-connected headset is attached to the discrete GPU rather than a motherboard video output.
  • Controllers track but cannot operate switches: Wake them before enabling VR, check their runtime bindings and test a default aircraft.
  • X-Plane crashes when VR is enabled: Start with a default aircraft and temporarily move third-party plugins out of Resources/plugins. Restore them individually after VR works.
  • A laptop opens VR on integrated graphics: Set X-Plane and the headset runtime to use the high-performance GPU in the operating system or graphics-driver settings.
  • Wireless VR stutters while wired VR does not: Treat it as a PC-link transport problem. The PC should ideally use wired Ethernet, with the headset on a strong, uncongested local wireless connection.

Once a default aircraft works in a clean configuration, reintroduce custom aircraft, scenery, plugins and overlays one at a time. That isolates the component responsible instead of masking the fault with unrelated graphics changes.
