This freeware release features a meticulously crafted repaint of the Lockheed L-188 Electra in Buffalo Airways markings (registration C-GLBA), designed for use with Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Developed by Team FS KBT as the base model and repainted by Fabio Cabral (fscabral), it ensures a visually captivating experience for those who appreciate classic turboprop operations, particularly those conducted by Buffalo Airways in northern Canada.

Buffalo Airways Turboprop Details

Buffalo Airways is known for maintaining a vintage fleet that excels in transporting cargo and passengers across remote regions. Their Lockheed L-188 Electra, originating from the late 1950s, incorporates multiple Allison turboprop engines. This aircraft’s unique heritage and rugged performance profile make it a staple for challenging flights in harsh climates.

High-Definition Repaint Characteristics

  • DXT5 Texturing: Uses DXT5 (a high-fidelity format) to enhance the aircraft’s exterior finish.
  • 4096 Resolution: Offers improved clarity at close range, provided TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=4096 is enabled in the simulator configuration.
  • Historic Registration: Incorporates the official tail number C-GLBA as seen on real-world Buffalo Airways’ Electras.

Base Model Requirements

This repaint is compatible with the freeware Lockheed L-188 Electra II by Team FS KBT. The underlying package does not come bundled here and must be retrieved separately from the Fly Away Simulation library. Once obtained, merge the repaint folder into your existing installation.

Implementing the Repaint

  1. Copy the “texture.buffalo2HD” folder into your ELEC_CARGO directory.
  2. Add the following entry in the aircraft.cfg file. Replace “x” with the next available number:
[fltsim.x]

Graphics Settings for HD Textures

To ensure the highest clarity, locate FSX.cfg (often found in the user application data folder). Open it in a text editor and scroll to the [GRAPHICS] section. Change TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD to 4096 if it is not already set. Keep in mind that modifying display options in Microsoft Flight Simulator X may reset this value to 1024. Consider a simple external utility that preserves 4096 if frequent adjustments are required.

Developer Acknowledgments

The base Lockheed L-188 Electra model was developed by Team FS KBT, while the high-resolution repaint you see here was crafted by Fabio Cabral (fscabral). Both teams have contributed significantly to bringing this iconic turboprop to life for simulator enthusiasts.
