This freeware package offers a full-featured Swissair McDonnell Douglas MD-11 (registration HB-IWA) for FS2004, created by the talented developers at iFDG (International Flightsim Design Group). It includes authentic control-surface animations, reflective exterior textures, and highly detailed visual elements suitable for enthusiasts who appreciate precise replication of real-world aircraft performance. The model pays tribute to Swissair’s legacy as a significant Swiss national carrier, once known for its impeccable service and European route network.

Advanced Tri-Jet Engineering
This MD-11, produced in Long Beach, California, represents a modern evolution of the earlier DC-10 series. It maintains the distinctive three-engine setup (two wing-mounted turbofans and one tail-mounted engine) that provides both strong thrust and a recognizable silhouette. The architecture of the MD-11 addresses efficiency demands through recontoured wing edges, integrated winglets, and a streamlined tail cone intended to diminish aerodynamic drag.
Integrated Flight Deck and Automation
A key highlight is the advanced cockpit layout, which utilizes six primary CRT displays. These screens consolidate crucial data such as flight instruments, aircraft systems, and navigational details. The integrated flight management computers help optimize fuel usage, and a dedicated automatic flight control system streamlines normal as well as emergency tasks. This thoughtful flight deck design reduces crew workload by automating many checklist procedures.
Versatile Cabin and Cargo Solutions
Operators worldwide employed the MD-11 in passenger, freighter, convertible, and combi variations. Its spacious lower deck accommodates a substantial volume of containerized cargo, enhancing revenue beyond passenger ticket sales. Depending on the chosen cabin layout, the MD-11 holds from about 285 to more than 400 passengers in different seating configurations. This flexibility contributed to the popularity of the type among several airlines, including Swissair.
Performance and Range Capabilities
When departing at maximum takeoff weight, standard MD-11 variants can cover long intercontinental routes of more than 7,000 statute miles (approximately 12,000 km) while carrying hundreds of passengers plus baggage. An extended-range (ER) option adds an additional fuel tank and allows operation at a higher maximum takeoff weight for flights exceeding 8,000 statute miles. Engine choices commonly include the General Electric CF6-80C2 or the Pratt & Whitney 4460/4462 series, offering high thrust and efficiency.
Highly Detailed iFDG Modeling
This release by iFDG incorporates a realistic external model with robust animations: flaperons, landing gear, spoilers, and a comprehensive lighting array for visibility in every scenario. Wingviews deepen immersion, reflecting the realistic vantage points passengers would have in the cabin. The reflective textures are finely tuned to capture environmental lighting effects and highlight the iconic Swissair livery.
Installation and Usage
To install, simply decompress all files into your main Flight Simulator aircraft directory. Any contents in the “effects” subfolder should be placed within the simulator’s EFFECTS folder to activate visual enhancements (triggered by pressing the “I” key during flight). Since this package is fully freeware, it includes the base model, textures, and all associated components from iFDG without additional downloads required.
This aircraft was meticulously developed by iFDG (International Flightsim Design Group), well-known in the flight simulation community for crafting accurate freeware add-ons with emphasis on system functionality and visual fidelity.
