Discover a refined rendition of El Paso International Airport (KELP) tailored for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. This specialized freeware add-on, developed by Ray Smith using Airport Design Editor (ADE) [an application used for modifying and creating detailed airport layouts], brings more realistic parking, updated taxiways, and optional crosswind runway activation to enhance the airfield’s overall functionality and immersion.

Key Modifications and Enhanced Layout

El Paso International Airport serves as a major airport in far western Texas. It features multiple runways that accommodate a wide variety of aircraft. In this upgraded scenery package, you will notice:

  • Crosswind Capability: An included variant activates all three runways so that simultaneous operations become possible in realistic weather scenarios.
  • Improved Parking Assignments: Each gate and ramp has been aligned with real-world positioning, ensuring proper aircraft parking and facilitating AI traffic.
  • Renovated Ground Routes: Support vehicle paths, taxiway markings, and taxi signs have been adjusted to better reflect on-site operations.
  • Additional Fuel Services: Extra fuel trucks have been introduced, ensuring convenient access to refueling.
  • Tower Perspective: When you switch to tower view, enjoy a vantage point from the control tower roof, offering broader visibility across the airport complex.

Included BGL Files

KELP_ADE_RS.BGL
Implements the default runway operation for those preferring the standard setup.
KELP_ADE_CW_RS.BGL
Enables crosswind operations so that all three runways can handle traffic concurrently.
KELP_ADE_OBJ.BGL
Incorporates additional 3D objects and details into the airport environment.

Choosing Runway Configurations

If you select KELP_ADE_CW_RS.BGL, crosswind capability allows each runway to be utilized simultaneously. Alternatively, KELP_ADE_RS.BGL preserves a more conventional approach. Both files share the same gate assignments, so your choice simply depends on whether you prefer parallel or combined runway usage. Keep in mind that activating crosswind runways often triggers “fake” runway information on ATIS transcripts, which is normal for non-parallel runway activation.

Installation Process

  1. Remove or overwrite any previous versions of these AFCAD files for KELP if they are present in your setup.
  2. Select one runway file (KELP_ADE_RS.BGL or KELP_ADE_CW_RS.BGL) and place it into your “Addon Scenery/scenery” folder within your main Microsoft Flight Simulator X directory.
  3. Copy the KELP_ADE_OBJ.BGL file to your “Scenery/Global/scenery” folder in the main installation path.
  4. Restart Microsoft Flight Simulator X to see the reconfigured airport layout.

Important Reminders

You should only keep one runway operation file active in the “Addon Scenery/scenery” folder at any given time. Having more than one version can lead to parking inaccuracies and potential conflicts. Furthermore, if you use an AI traffic add-on, ensure no other AFCAD file for KELP is installed elsewhere, as simultaneous AFCADs cause unintended issues.

Uninstallation

  1. Delete or move the BGL files you added from your respective “Addon Scenery/scenery” and “Scenery/Global/scenery” folders.
  2. Microsoft Flight Simulator X will revert to the default airport configuration upon the next launch.

This modified airport layout for El Paso International Airport is brought to you by Ray Smith. It captures the essence of this western Texas hub with technical precision while integrating seamlessly into FSX, ultimately offering a more engaging flight simulation experience.
