Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is about 700 kms north of Sydney and 200 km south of Brisbane and is the main airport for the Northern Rivers region located in Northern New South Wales, Australia. The airport is located in Ballina, a coastal tourist town on the northern shores of the Richmond River. Ballina is most famous for the Big Prawn (included in scenery). The world famous Byron Bay is only 30kms north of Ballina and the airport serves the large tourist market with the name of the airport reflecting this. These tourists make Ballina a busier airport than the nearby Lismore airport even though Lismore has a larger population than Ballina. Only Rex flies into Lismore while Virgin, Jetstar and Rex fly into Ballina. There are daily flights from Sydney and Melbourne operated by Virgin Australia (B737) and Jetstar (A320). Rex (Saab340) also has flights to Newcastle and Sydney. Rex services will typically stop at nearby Lismore airport as well as Ballina.

Other businesses located at the airport include Aussie Air Flight School, Byron Bay Air Charter (C310), Classic Aero Adventure Flights (Winjeel), Air T&G helicopter flights and training, Aeroweld aircraft repairs and Lightwing aircraft manufacturers.

The airport features a 1900m runway. The RPT apron can support two aircraft at a time.

The scenery includes a huge 100 square kms of 1m per pixel photoreal covering the airport, Ballina township and the new Pacific Highway bypass. The photoreal is fully autogened with custom building textures and the occasional landmark building.

The airport itself is 60cm per pixel photoreal and includes highly detailed airport buildings.

Other features include:

  • New custom night lighting including accurate runway and taxiway lighting.
  • New custom FSX native T-VASIS approach lighting.
  • Accurate taxiway and runway markings.
  • Over 350 custom made models including (but not limited to) street signs, cars, trucks, people, trees, bushes, advertising signs and lights.
