This freeware repaint by Frank Idone features authentic Ozark Airlines textures for the short-fuselage Douglas DC-9-15 designed specifically for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. It represents an era when Ozark, a regional carrier based in the Midwestern United States, utilized these versatile twinjets on shorter routes that required reliable performance on reduced-length runways. The modified artwork delivers a vintage look reflecting Ozark’s original color scheme. Installation is simple but requires the freeware base pack from the Fly Away Simulation library.
Visual Details and Background
The DC-9-15 in this package showcases carefully rendered external markings typical of Ozark Airlines’ classic livery, capturing the sleek lines of the original airframe. This variant, part of the broader DC-9 family developed for short to medium hops, maintained seating for up to 90 passengers while offering sufficient cargo hold volume to meet regional operational demands. Ozark favored the DC-9 primarily because of its robust JT8D-series powerplants (noted for their reliability and up to 14,000 pounds of thrust), which helped ensure safe operations from smaller airports. The airline itself was well-known around the mid to late 20th century for providing vital connectivity across states, serving communities often overlooked by larger carriers.

Livery by Frank Idone.
The DC-9 was designed specifically to operate from short runways and on short- to medium-range routes so that the speed, comfort and reliability of jet transportation could be extended to hundreds of communities previously served only by propeller-driven airliners. The series 10 was the first in the twinjet family, the fuselage length of the Series 10 DC-9 is 104.4 feet (31.8 m), accommodating up to 90 passengers with 600 cubic feet (16.9 m3) of cargo space below the floor. Wingspan is 89.4 feet (27.2 m). Engines can be JT8D-5s or JT8D-7s, with takeoff thrust ratings up to 14,000 pounds.
Key Technical Insights
- Engine Performance: The JT8D-series powerplants offer robust thrust for compact runway operations.
- Passenger Capacity: Designed to serve up to 90 travelers in a single-class seating arrangement.
- Cargo Space: Adequate below-floor volume to handle baggage and small freight, making it suitable for regional tasks.
- Versatility: Created to reach numerous short-haul destinations that benefitted from jet speed and reliability.
This unique package preserves the historical significance of Ozark Airlines while providing a fully realized, era-appropriate exterior for your virtual fleet. It remains freeware, and is credited entirely to Frank Idone. The base model by SGA must be downloaded separately. Enjoy the retro styling in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 with this homage to a pivotal carrier of the past.
