This repaint showcases a classic 1984-era Scandanavian Airlines DC-9-41 livery developed by Frank Idone. It is designed exclusively for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 enthusiasts seeking to fly a faithful recreation of a short- to medium-haul jet configured for challenging runway operations. The textures add an authentic look to the reputable SGA Douglas DC-9-40 base model and capture distinctive airline markings from the mid-1980s.

Historical Configuration Details

The Douglas DC-9-41 stretches to approximately 125.6 feet (38.3 m) in length, accommodating up to 125 passengers in short- to medium-range routes. This airframe builds on the popular Series 30 by introducing additional cabin space while retaining the same sturdy wing design. Its powerplants often include JT8D-9, JT8D-11, or JT8D-15 engines, enabling reliable performance on shorter fields. In 1984, operators like Scandanavian Airlines leveraged these aircraft to serve numerous European destinations where runway length was limited.

Highlighting the Aircraft’s Role

Specifically tailored for shorter runways, the DC-9 employs a design ethos that extends comfortable, jet-driven travel to regional airports. Airline fleets in the 1980s adopted these airliners to ensure faster turnaround and logistical efficiency. This livery references registration SE-DBW and flight number 984, reflecting realistic operational markings.

Applying the Textures

Note: These textures are built exclusively for the freeware SGA DC9 package (file name: SGA940.ZIP) available in the Fly Away Simulation library. Installing the base model is essential before applying this repaint.

Installation Process

  1. Extract the included files directly into the SGA Douglas DC9-40 aircraft folder.
  2. Open the aircraft.cfg file and add the following entry, ensuring you replace “XX” with the next available sequence number:

[fltsim.XX] title=SGA DC-9-40 SAS 84 sim=SGA DC9_40 model= panel= sound= texture=sas84 checklists= atc_id=SE-DBW atc_airline=Scandanavian atc_flight_number=984 ui_manufacturer=McDonnell Douglas ui_type=DC-9-41 ui_variation=Scandanavian Airlines (1984) description=DC-9 no.319 flown by Scandanavian Airlines. Livery by Frank Idone. The DC-9 was designed specifically to operate from short runways and on short- to medium-range routes so that the speed, comfort and reliability of jet transportation could be extended to hundreds of communities previously served only by propeller-driven airliners. Series 40: To again meet airline demands for a DC-9 with more capacity, the Series 40 was developed with a fuselage length of 125.6 feet (38.3 m). Seating is available for up to 125 passengers. Below-floor cargo space totals 1,019 cubic feet (28.8 m3). The Series 40 uses the same wing as the Series 30. Series 40 engines are JT8D-9s, JT8D-11s or JT8D-15s. The model entered service in March 1968.
