Expert Overview

This add-on transforms 3W5 Mears Field in northern Washington into a remarkably detailed and visually stunning environment, perfectly capturing the airport’s sunrise flights and mountain backdrops. From my tests in the Cascade Range, the short paving and surrounding high trees pose a genuine challenge for approach and departure, ideal for pilots looking to refine their mountain-flying skills while appreciating the Skagit River’s beauty.

Beyond the runway, you’ll discover custom-made hangars and surrounding buildings, lending an authentic small-town feel to the airfield. The nearby North Cascades Vintage Aircraft Museum adds an extra layer of historical charm by featuring classic aircraft on display. Overall, this is a delightful and immersive scenery enhancement that offers a fresh perspective on a beloved regional airport.

Mears Field, or formerly known as Concrete Municipal Airfield is a small airport in northern Washington.

Aerial view of Mears Field airport. It is located along the Skagit river, just south of Lake Shannon and Baker Lake, and just south of mount Baker. An incredibly scenic area within the Cascade Range, great for mountain flying (as weather permits). Mears Field has a relatively short paved runway and high trees on both runways end, making it a very tricky airport.

It also is home to some wonderful historic aircraft from the North Cascades Vintage Aircraft Museum and hosts many fly-ins. Plenty of Fairchild, Luscombe and Waco aircraft to be found! Nearly all airport buildings have been custom built purely based on readily available imagery. Off-airfield buildings are library versions. Library requirements are listed in the package.

How to install this mod

X-Plane scenery
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Copy into Custom Scenery

Place the scenery folder into X-Plane 12/Custom Scenery/.
  3. Set scenery load order

X-Plane loads sceneries top-to-bottom from Custom Scenery/scenery_packs.ini. Custom airports should be ABOVE mesh and ortho-imagery.
  4. Restart X-Plane

Close X-Plane completely and relaunch. The new content loads automatically.
  5. Always read the included readme

Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.

l enjoy anything to do with Flight sims, started in 1998, and haven't stopped yet. My favorites are FS2020 and Xplane 11. Always check out your notices/letters. Full of interest. Many thanks, F Attwood.
