Technical Details:

  • Orthophoto Source - USGS (USA_2 server)
  • Elevation Data - 1/3 arc-second DEM from the USGS
  • Orthophoto Resolution - Zoom Level 16 with Zoom Level 17 within 4km of airports
  • Inland and Complex Water Masks - True.
  • Terrain Decals (gritty textures) - True
  • Curv_Tolerance set to 1.0
  • Overlay data - With permission from alpilotX
  • Created with Ortho4XP by Oscar Pilote

Arizona photoreal scenery.The orthophotos and elevation data are derived from public domain sources (USGS). The derived work is copyright by myself and alpilotX for the overlays. You are free to redistribute and/or modify these so long as you do not use them for commercial purposes and you give credit to alpilotX and Forkboy2.

Installation Instructions:

  1. Unzip the file to your Custom Scenery Folder.
  2. Navigate to the textures sub-folder and double-click on ALL FIVE of the _ConvertToDDS.bat files. This will convert the JPGs to DDS format. You can run all five at the same time to speed up the conversion process. The conversion process may take several hours on slower computers. DO NOT run _Unneeded_File_Cleanup.bat yet.
  3. Confirm that you have 5,059 DDS files and 318 PNG files in the textures folder and that all of the DDS files are 10.6 megabytes. If this is true, then the conversion worked. If it's not true, then you did something wrong.
  4. You can now manually delete all of the JPG files, the DLL files, and nvcompress.exe. Or you can execute _Unneeded_File_Cleanup.bat to delete these unneeded files for you. Do NOT delete the PNG files.
  5. Update your scenery_packs.ini file as shown below. These should be the last two entries, unless you have other global scenery packages installed, in which case these would probably go above the other global packages.

  6. That's it, Enjoy.

I also highly recommend Installing US West Real Life, in which case your scenery_packs.ini file should look like this at the end.

Editorial

The region of Arizona, housing close to 7m people, is one of the most stunning areas of the United States. However, in X-Plane 10 and 11, it is lacking a little bit of the unique personality that The Copper State should always showcase. Thanks to this package put together by Forkboy2, though, you can now enjoy a far more extensive experience as you fly across Arizona.

This orthophoto scenery package helps to elevate the whole region, improving everything from the quality of autogen and the accuracy of roads to elevation points and quality of the textures being used across the region.

With Zoom 16 and 17 quality scenery within 4km of any airports in the Arizona region, this helps to paint as much of the whole location as possible. By taking quality elevation data and orthophotos from major sources such as the USGS, this work carries three major hallmarks that make it worth having: accuracy, realism, and scale. This isn’t just covering a small part of Arizona in great detail: it covers as much of it as it possibly can.

With over 20GB in the download and even more when uncompressed, this is a hard-hitting and effective remake of the Grand Canyon State!

Stunning inland and complex water masks are used across the board, alongside terrain decals to help make it look as authentic as possible. Thanks to the depth and detail of the textures, too, it helps the new and improved elevation data – with a 1/3 arc-second DEM from the USGS – to really reflect the nature of Arizona.

Our Thoughts

Having used the Orthophotos collection for various parts of the new X-Plane 11 revolution, this stacks up. The attention to detail and the precision that goes into every last feature is so impressive. From the way that the terrain lines up to the attention to detail on the landscape, everything has been thought of. This makes the whole of Arizona begin to look far more like the beautiful landscape it is in real-life.

Rather than generic layouts, excessive use of autogen and a little imagination, this recreates Arizona far more faithfully. Within the realms of realism, this does everything possible to paint the world below as closely and clearly as it can be to the real Arizona.

A huge amount of work and patience has gone into each section, and it shines through across every pixel of the “new” Arizona.

Very nice work! I had to convert the instructions to get them to work on Linux but nothing major. Can I submit some Linux/Mac scripts for you to add?
