This freeware release brings flight simulation enthusiasts a carefully modeled Myanmar Airways Int’l Airbus A320-231 pack, tailored for FSX with DirectX 9. Both XY-AGG and XY-AGI liveries are included, reflecting the airline’s move to expand routes beyond Myanmar’s borders in late 2009. Created by HOUSE-RP and Project Airbus, with permission from Hla Myo Kyaw, this downloadable package contains the fully detailed aircraft model, including realistic animations and numerous technical refinements.
Two Distinct Liveries and Their Background
Myanmar Airways International (often abbreviated as MAI) added the Airbus A320-231 to modernize its operations and enhance service reliability. The two jets represented here—XY-AGG and XY-AGI—are the largest aircraft in the fleet, designed for regional routes across Asia while featuring notable cabin comfort upgrades. Historically, the A320 family stands out for its advanced fly-by-wire system and efficient CFM56 powerplants (in brackets: [engines specifically developed in a Franco-American partnership]) that deliver consistent operational performance.
Key Package Details
- Type of Add-on
- A completely standalone freeware aircraft pack, featuring Project Airbus’s A320 framework.
- Compatibility
- Developed for FSX (DX9). The internal structure may not be fully compatible with other simulators.
- Configured Pairs
- Both XY-AGG and XY-AGI, representing fresh additions to Myanmar Airways Int’l long-haul capabilities.
Notes on Original Testing
This aircraft collection has been validated for use in Microsoft Flight Simulator 9 and optimized to run under FSX DirectX 9 conditions. Some older references within its documentation mention FS9, but the content available here is focused on FSX functionality. Further testing for alternative platforms is not currently part of the plan.
Origins of Project Airbus
Project Airbus first emerged during a transformative period in flight simulation. Enthusiasts like Trevor Slack and Thomas Ruth collaborated on the A300 before bringing their methods to the A320. The success of those ventures showcased advanced XML integrations and high-fidelity animations. Over time, more contributors joined, such as Nicholas Wu and Michael Karam, each bringing unique insights to refine the modeling and texture quality. The A320’s release illustrated an unprecedented dedication to detail, leading to expansions and further refinements. This continued evolution helped establish the platform we benefit from today for authentic Airbus experiences on home simulators.
Installation Method
- Unzip all contents into your “Flight Simulator 9/Aircraft” directory if using FS9. For FSX, place the unzipped “Project Airbus A320” folder into “SimObjects/Airplanes.”
- Move or merge the “Effects” folder’s files into the main “Effects” directory to ensure all visual cues work accurately.
- Confirm that the panel and sound aliases are set, if present, to avoid missing cockpit elements or audio issues.
Highlighted Technical Innovations
- Pressurization Outflow Valve – Maintains cabin pressure and dynamically adjusts to lower speeds on the ground.
- Ground Spoilers – Deploy and stow accurately based on weight-on-wheels logic and throttle settings.
- Pack Outlets – Vary their airflow in response to ambient temperature changes.
- Idle Reversers Simulation – Engage transitions realistically with slight delays upon retraction and correct open angles at idle reverse thrust.
- Visual Jetwash – Triggered when engines are active, improving immersion around airport ramps.
- Dropped Control Surfaces – Ailerons and elevators droop visibly when all engine power is cut, reflecting hydraulic pressure loss.
Aside from these XML-controlled nuances, the package includes opening passenger and cargo doors, advanced lighting (double strobes, navigation, and beacons), accurate touchdown visuals, and retractable gear with lifelike motion. Full dynamic shine is integrated, and there are various wingview angles for immersive cabin perspectives.
Door Operations
Use the standard Shift+E command for the L1 door, while L2 and the cargo doors are managed by the configurable tail hook key bind. The right-hand doors open through the wing fold key assignments. Adjust these in your simulator’s control settings if they are not already mapped.
Development Team Acknowledgments
Courtesy of HOUSE-RP and Project Airbus, this package also reflects the collaborative spirit of:
- Thomas Ruth – Virtual cockpit layout, texturing, and core XML logic
- Andy Warden – External model engineering
- Peter Binamira – Flight dynamics and audio design
- Demetris Themistocleous & Alessandro Savarese – Base textures
- John Tavendale & Derek Mayer – Additional liveries for wide audience usage
- Matthew Murray – Organizational and branding insight
- Gianmarco Bettiol & Nick Wu – Imagery contributions and key feedback
- Trevor Slack & Alexander Kvitta – Ongoing testing and refinements
- David Bromwich – Overall design input
Additional painting assistance and ideas came from contributors including Ben Jones, Dickson Chan, and others, while flight dynamics and reviews were aided by professional airline personnel like Capt. Manny Osias, F/O Spike Acenas, and more. Their expertise helped shape the final handling characteristics and operational parameters of this freeware release.
