This repaint package brings one of British Airtours’ classic Lockheed L1011 TriStar jets to FSX users seeking a distinctive widebody experience. It is fully compatible with the freeware Tom_L1011-100 base model (not included), which must be obtained separately. Created by Paul Craig, this repainted livery (registration G-BEAM, known as “Silver Jubilee Rose”) accurately illustrates the airline’s historic visuals on a vintage tri-jet.
Lockheed TriStar and Its British Airtours Connection
The Lockheed L1011 TriStar, first flying in 1969, gained prominence for its advanced avionics and dependable performance. British Airtours, once a subsidiary of a major UK carrier, employed the TriStar on various holiday routes. This repaint celebrates the airliner’s unique aesthetic, blending timeless British color schemes with the smooth lines of the three-engined airframe.
High-Fidelity Livery Details
This modification features two distinct texture resolutions designed to adapt to varying system capabilities:
- 1024×1024 – A balanced resolution intended for improved frame rates.
- 2048×2048 – High-detail textures for those seeking precision and clarity.
The textures in both packs utilize in-depth detailing, showcasing fuselage nuances and tail section markings, which replicate the real aircraft’s design.
Creators and Credits
The original TriStar model was developed by Thomas Ruth and Erick Cantu. This specific British Airtours repaint has been carefully produced by Paul Craig to reflect the registration G-BEAM and bring the classic livery to life within FSX.
Installation Process Explained
1. Unzip the Files
First, extract all contents to a temporary location. Depending on your goals, either copy the 1024×1024 or 2048×2048 textures folder (named texture.British Airtours) into the main directory of your Tom_L1011-100 installation.
2. Target Directory
Place texture.British Airtours inside the standard folder, typically found at:
OS (C)/Program Files (x86)/Microsoft Games/Microsoft Flight Simulator X/SimObjects/Airplanes/Tom_L1011-100
3. Aircraft Configuration Update
After you back up your aircraft.cfg file, open the current configuration document in a text editor and add this new entry at the bottom:
[fltsim.X] title=L1011-100 British Airtours sim=tom1011 model= panel= sound= texture=British Airtours kb_checklists=Boeing747-400_check kb_reference=Boeing747-400_ref atc_id=G-BEAM atc_airline=B(ea)tours atc_flight_number=1123 atc_heavy=1 ui_manufacturer=Lockheed ui_type=L1011-100 ui_variation=British Airtours ui_typerole=Commercial Airliner ui_createdby=Thomas Ruth + Eric Cantu description= First Flight on November 16, 1969 at Palmdale, California’s entry into service with Eastern on April 26, 1972. Total Production: 250. Production end: 1982.
Be sure to replace the “X” with the next available fltsim number in sequence.
Performance Tips
For those encountering issues with system resources, consider reverting to the 1024×1024 textures. If any difficulties arise editing the aircraft.cfg, duplicate the file first, edit the copy elsewhere, then move it back to the FSX folder.
