This enhanced F-15 Strike Eagle freeware package features the early “Air Superiority Blue” variant and the historic “TAC-1” (tail number 73108), which was the first operational F-15 delivered to the United States Air Force. Developed originally by Nathan Fife, with textures crafted by Mark Rooks of RDG Aircraft, this release has been adapted for Microsoft Flight Simulator X and includes panel updates by Danny Garnier. It incorporates a 2D instrument panel, a virtual cockpit (VC), accurate afterburner effects, and details illustrating the background of this famed Tactical Air Command aircraft.

The Evolution of TAC-1 in Tactical Air Command

The first delivery of this F-15 to Luke Air Force Base signaled a major step in air superiority. Initially, these airframes showcased a striking blue livery; however, real-world evaluations soon led to a practical two-tone gray scheme for enhanced stealth against cloudy European skies. Known widely for its formidable aerial combat record, the F-15 platform has engaged various adversaries—ranging from the MiG-25 “Foxbat” to the McDonnell Douglas F-4—without incurring a single loss. This model, famously called “TAC-1,” gives simmers a chance to experience the beginnings of the Eagle’s renowned service history.

Installation Procedure With Detailed Steps

  1. Back Up Your Files: Before introducing new content, preserve your existing files to avoid any data conflicts.
  2. Extract the Download: Unzip the main archive (“F-15 TAC 1 Eagle.zip”) to a temporary folder or your desktop.
  3. Copy Aircraft Files: Move the unzipped “CFG,” “Airfile,” “Model,” “Sound,” “Panel,” and “Textures” folders into your “SimObjects/Airplanes” directory within “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\.”
  4. Effects Placement: Unpack and merge the “Afterburner” and “Smoke” effects into the “Effects” folder found within your FSX installation path. This ensures all visual enhancements operate correctly.
  5. Optional Canopy Tint: If you prefer a different canopy color, consult the included readme in the canopy folder for a quick swap procedure.

Cockpit Insights and Visual Upgrades

Users can alternate between the classic 2D layout and the in-cockpit 3D environment. The 2D panel displays essential instrumentation for typical flight operations, while the VC better immerses pilots by simulating realistic vantage points and equipment placements. Additional color and smoke effects, as well as the aerodynamically precise shape of the F-15, contribute to a faithful rendering of this legendary combat aircraft.

This is a picture of an F-15A model (with 1 seat). TAC1 was an F-15B model (with 2 seats).
