This freeware add-on introduces a specialized Rosinenbomber (Candy Bomber) mission for Microsoft Flight Simulator X Acceleration, focusing on the historic Berlin Airlift and the iconic Douglas DC-3. It includes a custom repaint, multiple configuration options, and an immersive experience that transports you back to the days when these aircraft delivered vital supplies to Berlin. Created by Tim Morianz, with additional repaints and support by various contributors, this mission caters to virtual pilots who appreciate vintage aviation and the fascinating legacy of Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport.

Historic Insights on the DC-3 and the Berlin Airlift

This mission revolves around a DC-3 variant that once flew in real-world operations—often called the “Rosinenbomber.” During the late 1940s, these aircraft delivered essential items to Berlin citizens, culminating in a defining moment of Cold War history known as the Berlin Airlift. The rugged DC-3 airframe gained further modifications enabling passenger flights, resulting in unique seat arrangements and additional emergency exits for civilian use.

Developer Tim Morianz recounts traveling on the actual C-47 operated by Air Service Berlin, originally built during wartime. That aircraft took part in various missions, including service with the RAF, and ultimately flew around the globe before returning to Berlin. His real-life experience inspires this digital homage within Microsoft Flight Simulator X Acceleration.

Key Contributors and Voices

Tim “Malloy” Morianz provides the voice for the English version of this mission, while Markus “Pidder” Hunold contributes narration for the German variant. The paintwork comes from M.D. Saliger. Special recognition goes to Manfred and Peter Stark for their guidance—Peter’s tutorial on mission-building significantly aided the creation process. Future developments are hinted at, so the mission folder structure includes “FSXplorer,” where more scenarios by Tim might appear later.

Compatibility and Requirements

This mission necessitates FSX Acceleration because it relies on the Berlin Tempelhof scenery provided in that expansion. It has not been thoroughly tested with non-Acceleration setups, although some users might find partial compatibility with certain SP1 or SP2 installations. Activating Berlin Tempelhof in your scenery library is essential before attempting to fly this mission.

Installation Methods for a Customized Experience

There are three different ways to integrate the mission, with or without a custom repaint, and you can also incorporate the MAAM DC-3 version if owned.

A. Installing the Mission Without the Included Repaint

  1. Open the “FSX” folder contained in this download and move all files directly into your main FSX directory.
  2. Launch FSX and look for the new mission in the “Pilots For Hire” category, typically labeled as “Intermediate” difficulty.

Note: You may need to locate a “Mission” folder named “FSXplorer,” where the “Candy Bomber Berlin German” scenario is stored.

B. Installing the Mission with the Supplied Rosinenbomber Repaint

  1. Move all files from the “FSX” folder of this download into your primary FSX directory.
  2. Navigate to “Microsoft Flight Simulator X ? SimObjects ? Airplanes ? Douglas_DC3” on your system.
  3. From the “Repaint” folder in this download, copy “texture.Rosinenbomber” into the “Douglas_DC3” folder.
  4. Edit the aircraft.cfg (back it up first) in “Douglas_DC3” by adding the following block:

[fltsim.xxx]
title=Douglas DCXXX Rosinenbomber
sim=Douglas_DC3
model=
panel=
sound=
texture=Rosinenbomber
kb_checklists=Douglas_DC3_check
kb_reference=Douglas_DC3_ref

ui_variation=D-CXXX Rosinenbomber
ui_typerole="Twin Engine Prop"
ui_createdby=Microsoft Corporation
description=D-CXXX Rosinenbomber. Repaint M.D.Saliger 2009

  1. Go to “Microsoft Flight Simulator X ? Missions ? FSXplorer ? Candy Bomber Berlin german” on your PC.
  2. Locate the “Candy Bomber Berlin” FLT file in the “Repaint” folder here and overwrite the existing file to enable the custom livery during the mission.
  3. Run FSX and find the scenario under “Pilots For Hire” in the missions menu.

C. Installation Using the MAAM DC-3 (If Owned)

  1. Obtain the related “candy bomber” repaint created by Tim Scharnhop (it can be found by searching in third-party libraries). Install it following its instructions.
  2. Copy all contents from this mission download’s “FSX” folder into your main FSX directory.
  3. Open “Microsoft Flight Simulator X ? Missions ? FSXplorer ? Candy Bomber Berlin german.”
  4. Replace the FLT file “Candy Bomber Berlin” in that folder with the version from the “MAAM” folder provided here. Approve any overwrite prompts.
  5. Start FSX, and you will again find the mission listed under “Pilots For Hire.”

Uninstallation Steps

  1. Remove the folder “Candy Bomber Berlin German” in “Microsoft Flight Simulator X ? Missions ? FSXplorer.”
  2. Locate and delete “berling.rwd” from “Microsoft Flight Simulator X ? Rewards” to remove the corresponding reward file.
  3. If you installed the custom repaint, delete the “texture.ROSINENBOMBER” folder and restore your original aircraft.cfg from the backup.

All files placed during installation will be gone once this process is complete.
