Expand your virtual flight environment with a freeware rendition of Westover AFB (KCEF) in Chicopee, Massachusetts, meticulously crafted for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. This add-on, developed by Dick Kittredge, introduces added realism to one of the largest Air Force Reserve bases in the United States. Westover AFB is known for accommodating massive strategic airlifters like the C-5 Galaxy, and this enhancement emphasizes the detailed surroundings and unique operational atmosphere of this northeastern airfield. It integrates seamlessly into default scenery, while offering optional compatibility with Flight1's Ultimate Terrain for refined topographical accuracy.
Detailed Look at the Base Layout
The real-world Westover AFB features extensive paved surfaces, specialized hangars, and large cargo ramps designed for high-capacity deployments. This scenery incorporates those elements by accurately placing buildings, improved taxiways, and other visual cues around the field. Runways align precisely with the actual airport coordinates, helping pilots replicate real approach and landing techniques while navigating the Massachusetts landscape.

Creation Method and Key Recommendations
This add-on was assembled using Flight1’s Instant Scenery tool. Although you do not need Instant Scenery installed to enjoy the enhancements, the developer suggests using Flight1’s UT-FSX_Usa (Ultimate Terrain USA for FSX) for optimal object placement and terrain matching. Ultimate Terrain refines roads, waterways, and ground contours for a more faithful depiction of the surrounding region. However, even without this additional package, the core .bgl file still delivers notable improvements to the air base environment.
Key Features
- Accurate hangar and terminal positioning based on satellite references.
- Refined runway markings and precise taxiway design for realistic navigation.
- Enhanced vegetation placements near flight lines and perimeter areas.
- Optional compatibility with UT-FSX_Usa for capturing local terrain details.
Installation Steps
- Download and extract the main scenery file.
- Place the Westover AFB.bgl file into the “Addon Scenery/scenery” folder within your simulator’s directory.
- Ensure that your Addon Scenery folder is active in your scenery library.
- Launch Microsoft Flight Simulator X and verify the updated scenery around Westover AFB.
Once installed, you can experience the bustling cargo operations and strategic airlift role of Westover AFB as you explore this enhanced location in your simulator.
