Wisley in Surrey is a long wide grass strip which was used as a 'secret' airfield in WW2. The runway stretches across several farm fields, the control tower is built like a red brick country house [wisleytower.jpg], and the hangars and workshops, screened by trees, look more like farm buildings. It is located only 4nm south of EGLB Brooklands, and is effectively a satellite of that airfield. Its other use was in fitting out and finishing aircraft which had been assembled at the Vickers factory at Brooklands, these included the Hurricane fighter and the Wellington bomber. The fully fitted aircraft were then ferried to their assigned stations. In the original 'Dambusters' movie, the Wellington carrying the prototype bombs can be seen taking off from Wisley, earlier Barnes Wallis, Guy Gibson, and Mutt Summers can be seen talking by the control tower house. The airfield was decommissioned several years ago, all the buildings demolished, and is now a garbage incinerator. This scenery attempts to create the look and feel of Wisley, with the specially built control tower, and is consequently difficult to spot from the air. Two radio beacons are installed, an NDB and the default OCK VOR, which is an approach marker for EGLL London Heathrow. PAPI approach lights are installed, and always ON; in practice they would only come on for an expected landing.
