Flight Simulator X Prepar3D

Take to the simulated skies with an accurately recreated edition of the Grumman American AA-5B Tiger, a single-engine, four-seat aircraft renowned for its bonded honeycomb framework and sporty flight traits. This freeware package by Tim Conrad is geared for Microsoft Flight Simulator X and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, offering an authentic external finish drawn from real-life examples, fully functional animations, and a detailed virtual cockpit complete with specialized gauges. Additional files for FSX ensure a smooth transition process.

Characteristics of the Real-World Airframe

The original AA-5 series, introduced in the mid-1970s, stood out due to Grumman American’s unique bonded honeycomb design. This structural approach, distinguished by using layered materials bound with adhesives, reduced overall airframe weight yet maintained remarkable durability. In practice, pilots appreciated the well-balanced handling, which was complemented by the signature sliding canopy. That canopy design not only streamlined ingress and egress, but also facilitated superb visibility during flight.

Enhanced Performance in the AA-5B Variant

The AA-5B Tiger carried upgrades that elevated its speed and rate of climb. By installing a more potent engine, Grumman American supplied a noticeable jump in thrust compared to previous iterations. This additional horsepower made cross-country flying more efficient, as cruise speeds remained relatively high while still maintaining easy handling characteristics.

Noteworthy Features of the Freeware Add-On

This virtual aircraft, created by Tim Conrad, encompasses a faithful 3D model that captures the Tiger’s streamlined appearance. It accurately reproduces the real-world livery, letting simmers appreciate the same paint scheme seen on actual AA-5Bs. The package also incorporates:

  • Detailed Virtual Cockpit (VC): Experience custom gauges and user-friendly interface components within the 3D cockpit environment.
  • Full Animations: From control surfaces to the sliding canopy, each animated element brings the aircraft to life inside the simulator.
  • Cross-Simulator Compatibility: Separate configuration files are bundled, simplifying installation into Microsoft Flight Simulator X or Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004.

Observing the Aircraft in Action

The AA-5B Tiger’s agile flight envelope shines in short hops and longer routes alike. The relatively quick controls, combined with an efficient airframe, allow smooth transitions between climbing, cruising, and approach phases. Enthusiasts can also enjoy lower altitude touring to appreciate cabin views through the large canopy.

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D add-on
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Place files per the readme

Most FSX add-ons go into one of: SimObjects\Airplanes\, Addon Scenery\, Effects\, or Gauges\.
  3. Always read the included readme

Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.

The "read me" comments concerning the gauges files, which have their own file folder, are not specific enough for a novice to be able to separate. the gauges from the effects. The instructions are to copy these into two separate subfiles, i.e., gauges and effects. I understand that the simulation is created by an outside source, but the "read me" just does not provide enough information to make the simulation work as designed.

I would be happy to sign up for your higher-level membership, but in the past, when I was paying the fee, I asked for help and got no response.

    Your help would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

Tim Conrad does excellent work. I have enjoyed many of his planes. No issues with gauges, they work fine! BZ to Piglet.

Agree that if the gauges worked this would be great. Sounds from the notes that the designer doesn't normally use FSX...

If the gauges worked it would be perfect.

I fly with trackIR so a nicely done VC makes or breaks an aircraft right away for me. This plane has a very nice VC. The pin-up on the dash is a nice touch!
