The Cumana Airport (SVCU), Venezuela is a must have add-on for any flight enthusiast—if not for the city’s history, for the sophistication of the facility.

SVCU airport is located in the city of Cumana, Venezuela, which is situated in the northwest quadrant of the state (N10 27.2 W064 07.8). Although more than likely obscure to neophyte aviator, as many more seasoned flyers realize, the city of Cumana offers the ideal antipasto to the South American experience.

From a historical standpoint, the city of Cumana was the first European colonial settlement in mainland America. Honest to its roots, the city has maintained its colonial architecture, which provides a charming juxtaposition to its pristine beaches—including Playa San Luis.

The Cumana Airport airport is relatively modern, being that it was inaugurated in 1990 to replace the archaic San Luis Airport. As a facility—and looking at infrastructure—it sports a 3100 m x 45 m asphalt runway, and is a mid-sized airport.

The airport was a product of the synergies inherent to project finance and is a public private placement (PPP) operated by a state-owned concessionaire—the Venezuelan National Institute of Civil Aeronautics (INAC).
