How many passengers can an Airbus A320 carry?
An Airbus A320 normally carries about 150–180 passengers. A typical two-class cabin seats roughly 150–165, while a dense single-class layout often seats 180 or 186. Certain A320neo cabin and exit configurations are certified for up to 194, but that figure does not apply to every A320.
For Aviation & Real-World Flying purposes, “A320” should mean the A320 model itself rather than the entire A320 family. Search results often mix it with the smaller A319 and larger A321; our overview of seating and size across the A320 family separates those aircraft.
What is the typical A320 seating capacity?
Most airline A320s have approximately 150–186 installed passenger seats, depending on the cabin class and density.
| Cabin configuration | Approximate capacity | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Two class | 140–165 passengers | Business or premium seating plus economy |
| Single-class economy | 174–186 passengers | Short-haul and low-cost operations |
| Highest-density A320neo | Up to 194 passengers | Only with an approved cabin and exit configuration |
The familiar figure of 180 passengers comes from the widely used high-density A320 layout. Airlines fitting larger business-class seats, more generous seat pitch, extra galleys or additional lavatory space will carry fewer people.
Why do maximum figures vary between 180, 186 and 194?
The A320's maximum capacity depends on its certified emergency-exit arrangement and installed cabin, not simply on how many seat rows physically fit inside.
- 180 seats is the conventional maximum associated with many A320ceo and early A320neo cabins.
- 186 seats is possible in approved high-density layouts that recover space around the rear galley and lavatories.
- 194 seats is the upper figure for certain A320neo configurations with the necessary cabin design, exits and certification.
“Neo” does not automatically mean 194 seats. Many A320neos have 180 or 186, and the airline's approved layout remains the deciding factor. The larger A321 has different limits; our A320 and A321 capacity comparison explains why their figures should not be combined.
Does A320 passenger capacity include the crew?
Published A320 passenger capacity excludes the pilots and cabin crew.
It normally describes installed passenger seats, while the aircraft's total occupants also include the operating crew. Infants travelling without their own seats are recorded and handled under the operator's safety procedures, but they should not be treated as extra certified seats.
Can an A320 always depart with every seat occupied?
An A320 cannot always use every passenger seat because the flight may reach a weight, balance or performance limit first.
Long sectors, heavy baggage or cargo, short runways, high temperatures and airport elevation can reduce the permissible payload. A 180-seat aircraft may therefore depart with fewer than 180 passengers even though the cabin is certified for all seats.
Which capacity should I use in a flight simulator?
Use the seat count of the exact airline cabin being represented rather than automatically loading the aircraft to its theoretical maximum.
- Choose about 150 passengers for a conventional full two-class A320.
- Choose 180 passengers for a common dense all-economy layout.
- Use 186 or 194 only when the modelled A320 and operator configuration support that capacity.
If the aircraft add-on provides individual cabin loading stations, stay within their limits and distribute passengers as intended. A plausible headcount can still produce an invalid centre of gravity if everyone is placed in the same section.
