Can you use GSX with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004?

Adam McEnroe
In short

GSX for FS2004 is not supported. Learn why it will not work, what forcing the installer does, and which FS9 pushback alternatives to use.

No. GSX does not support Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (FS9), and there is no reliable compatibility method. Its installer and ground-service engine were built for later simulator platforms, so copying the package into the FS2004 directory—or disguising FS9 as another simulator—will not make boarding, baggage, catering or pushback work.

Why does GSX not work in FS2004?

GSX depends on simulator-specific code that FS2004 cannot load or communicate with. FS2004 and FSX are separate simulator generations, not interchangeable editions with different names; our coverage of the FSX release and its ground-service functions reflects the platform for which that edition was designed.

An aircraft or airport profile does not contain the GSX engine. It merely gives an installed, compatible GSX runtime information such as service positions, so importing profiles cannot add GSX functionality to FS9.

What happens if you force the GSX installer into FS2004?

Depending on the package revision, the installer may reject the location or write files that FS2004 cannot use. A mistake we see with incompatible add-ons is renaming fs9.exe, creating a fake FSX directory or manually copying modules and gauges in an attempt to bypass the platform check.

Those workarounds do not solve the underlying code incompatibility and can leave an untidy add-on installation. If you have already tried one, take these precautions:

  1. Undo any executable renaming. Restore the original fs9.exe name before starting the simulator.
  2. Remove only the attempted GSX installation. Use its uninstaller if available, or restore a known backup; do not indiscriminately delete the FS2004 Modules, Gauges or Effects folders.
  3. Test FS2004 without the incompatible files. Confirm that the simulator and an unmodified default aircraft load before reinstalling other add-ons.

What can you use instead of GSX in FS2004?

FS2004 users need FS9-native pushback, towing and ramp add-ons rather than a GSX conversion. Choose according to the feature you actually need:

RequirementFS2004 optionLimitation
Basic gate pushbackUse FS2004’s built-in pushback command, normally Shift+P, or the controls supplied with the aircraft. No GSX-style service sequence or detailed ground crew.
Visible tug or towing vehicleTry the FS2004-compatible TG5000 ramp tractor. It is a focused towing and ramp-vehicle alternative, not a complete GSX replacement.
Extra airport activityLook for scenery, vehicles and utilities explicitly marked FS2004 or FS9 in our freeware aircraft, scenery and add-ons library.Features may come from several separate add-ons rather than one integrated package.

Always check the simulator field and included documentation before installation. An add-on marked FSX, Prepar3D or MSFS is not automatically backwards-compatible just because it uses familiar folders such as Gauges or Effects.

Can GSX aircraft or airport profiles be converted to FS2004?

No direct conversion is possible because FS2004 lacks the GSX runtime that interprets those profiles. At most, position measurements could serve as a manual reference when configuring an FS9-native utility with comparable features; the converted data would not make GSX itself run.
