How do I change cockpit and external camera views in FSX?

Learn how to change camera views in FSX, switch cockpit and external angles, pan, zoom, move the eyepoint and fix unresponsive controls.

In FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, press S to cycle camera categories and A to cycle views within the selected category. Use F9 for the virtual cockpit, F10 for the 2D cockpit, F11 for locked spot and F12 for top-down. Hold Spacebar and move the mouse to look around.

How do I switch between FSX cockpit and external views?

S changes the view category, while A selects a camera inside that category.

  1. Choose a category: press S repeatedly to move between cockpit, outside and the other available camera categories. Use Shift+S to move backwards.
  2. Choose a camera: press A to cycle through the views defined inside the active category. Use Shift+A to go backwards.
  3. Jump directly to a common view: use F9 for virtual cockpit, F10 for 2D cockpit, F11 for locked spot and F12 for top-down.
  4. Adjust the angle: hold Spacebar while moving the mouse, or use a joystick POV hat, to pan around a 3D view.

The order reached with S and A is not identical for every aircraft. FSX builds that sequence from the camera definitions installed for the aircraft and simulator.

What do pan, eyepoint and zoom controls change?

Panning turns your view, eyepoint controls move the pilot's position, and zoom changes the field of view; these controls are not interchangeable.

AdjustmentDefault controlEffect
Look or panSpacebar plus mouse, or POV hatTurns the view; in an external spot-style camera this normally orbits around the aircraft.
Move forwardCtrl+BackspaceMoves the virtual-cockpit eyepoint towards the panel.
Move backwardsCtrl+EnterMoves the eyepoint away from the panel.
Move up or downShift+Enter or Shift+BackspaceRaises or lowers the pilot's position.
Move left or rightCtrl+Shift+Backspace or Ctrl+Shift+EnterMoves the eyepoint sideways.
Reset eyepointCtrl+SpacebarReturns the view to the aircraft's defined default position.
Zoom in or out= or -Changes field of view without moving the pilot or camera.

Eyepoint movement is mainly useful in the virtual cockpit. The 2D cockpit is built from fixed panels and subpanels, so it does not behave like a freely positioned 3D seat.

Why does the A key show different views on different aircraft?

The A key only cycles cameras defined for the selected aircraft and category, so one aircraft may offer wing, cabin or landing-gear views while another has only one camera.

If pressing A appears to do nothing, press S first. The active category may contain only a single view. Add-on aircraft can also replace, remove or reorder the default cameras, so relying on a fixed number of key presses is unreliable.

Can I save or add custom camera views in FSX?

FSX has no modern numbered custom-view slots; repeatable aircraft-specific angles are normally created with [CameraDefinition.n] sections in the aircraft's aircraft.cfg.

Per-aircraft files are found beneath SimObjects\Airplanes, while simulator-wide camera settings are held in Cameras.cfg within the active FSX application-data profile. Installation and profile paths differ between boxed FSX and Steam Edition, especially when both are installed.

Back up the configuration file and close FSX before editing it. Our ready-made internal and external camera definitions show the kinds of angles that can be added, while this worked Beaver aircraft.cfg camera example demonstrates the placement and use of aircraft-specific definitions.

Each custom camera needs a valid, unique definition. Duplicate section numbers, repeated GUIDs or a malformed block can prevent a view from appearing; restoring the backup is the fastest way to confirm that an edit caused the fault.

Why are my FSX camera controls not working?

Unresponsive camera keys are usually caused by changed assignments, laptop function-key behaviour, conflicting controller inputs or a camera add-on taking control of the view.

  • Check the assignments: open the FSX control settings and verify the commands for the next view category, next view in category, virtual cockpit, locked spot and pan view. Our control-assignment walkthrough explains how to find and rebind them.
  • Test laptop function keys: if F9 to F12 adjust volume or display brightness, use the laptop's Fn modifier or change its function-key mode.
  • Remove duplicate inputs: two controllers assigned to the POV hat or pan commands can make a view drift, snap back or ignore the keyboard.
  • Test mouse look in a 3D view: close any open menu or dialogue, select F9 or F11, then hold Spacebar while moving the mouse.
  • Temporarily disable camera or head-tracking add-ons: these can override FSX's normal mouse, keyboard and POV-hat commands.

Are the camera controls different in FSX: Steam Edition?

Boxed FSX and FSX: Steam Edition use the same core camera commands. The practical differences are saved control profiles, installation paths and application-data folders, so customised bindings and camera configuration files may not be shared between them.
