For the Steam edition, enable Steam Input if MSFS does not recognise the pad or provides an unusable profile. Do not run Steam Input and another XInput wrapper together.
- Open the controls screen. Select the DualSense, Wireless Controller or emulated Xbox controller. Change the controls filter from assigned commands to all commands if the lists appear empty.
- Create a custom profile. Map the flight axes and essential commands rather than relying on an incomplete automatic preset.
- Tune the axes. Add only enough dead zone to stop unwanted movement, then soften the response around the centre if the aircraft feels twitchy.

Which DualSense controls should you map?
Map analogue flight axes first, followed by trim, throttle and brakes; camera and cockpit shortcuts come afterwards.
- Left stick: aileron and elevator axes
- Left and right triggers: rudder left and right, or a combined rudder axis when the input layer provides one
- Right stick: cockpit and external camera movement
- Shoulder buttons: throttle decrease and increase
- D-pad: elevator trim, with spare directions available for flaps or view commands
- Face buttons: wheel brakes, parking brake, landing gear and a frequently used camera or interaction command
Use the assignments for an Xbox-style gamepad layout as a practical starting point when Steam Input presents the DualSense as an Xbox controller. Avoid assigning a stick to separate digital commands such as aileron left and aileron right; bind the analogue axis instead.
Does DualSense work with both MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024?
Both PC simulators can accept DualSense input, although the detected device name, default profile and available assignments can differ. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 also exists on PlayStation 5, but that does not guarantee that its PC edition will handle every DualSense feature in the same way.

Why is the DualSense not working correctly in MSFS?
Most DualSense problems come from Windows detection, competing input layers or incomplete control assignments rather than the controller being incompatible.
- Nothing appears in MSFS: try a known data-capable USB cable, verify the pad in
joy.cpl, connect it before launching the simulator and restart MSFS. - Every input happens twice: both the physical DualSense and an emulated Xbox controller are active. Disable either direct input or the translation layer.
- The aircraft yaws by itself: inspect the trigger and rudder assignments. DirectInput may expose the two triggers separately, while XInput can combine them differently.
- The camera drifts: remove duplicate camera bindings and add a small right-stick dead zone only if the stick does not return cleanly to centre.
- Buttons work but axes do not: bind the commands labelled as axes rather than their digital left, right, up or down equivalents.
- Sound changes after connecting by USB: Windows may select the controller's audio device. Restore your usual speakers or headset as the output device.
- Bluetooth disconnects: charge the controller, remove and pair it again, or use USB to rule out wireless interference.
Do adaptive triggers and DualSense haptics work on PC?
Core flight controls work, but PlayStation-specific features depend on the simulator build and input route. Steam Input or another XInput layer makes the DualSense look like an Xbox controller, so adaptive-trigger, touchpad, speaker and PlayStation button features should not be assumed through that route.
Expect conventional gamepad control first. Treat any enhanced vibration or DualSense-specific behaviour as optional rather than necessary for flying.
Do you still need a joystick?
No. A DualSense is sufficient for casual flying, external-camera work and aircraft with forgiving handling, but its short stick travel makes precise trimming and small control corrections harder than with a flight stick or yoke.
