How do I set up a T.Flight HOTAS 4 in MSFS?

How to configure the T.Flight HOTAS 4 on PC

The reliable order is driver installation, Windows testing, simulator profile creation, axis mapping and then an aircraft test.

  2. Connect the HOTAS directly. Plug it into a main USB port where possible, avoiding an unpowered hub. Keep it connected before starting Microsoft Flight Simulator.
  3. Test it in Windows. Run joy.cpl, open the controller’s properties and confirm that the stick, throttle and rudder axis move smoothly through their full ranges. A fault here must be fixed before changing MSFS settings.
  4. Open the simulator’s Controls screen. In MSFS 2020, use Controls Options; in MSFS 2024, open Controls from Settings. Select the T.Flight HOTAS 4 rather than the keyboard, mouse or gamepad.

Which T.Flight HOTAS 4 axes should I bind?

Bind every analogue control to an assignment containing the word Axis; digital commands such as Increase Throttle cause the lever to behave like an on/off button.

Use the general throttle axis when one lever must operate every engine. Binding only Throttle 1 Axis can leave the other engines at idle in a twin or four-engine aircraft. Which buttons are useful on the HOTAS 4?

Map only the controls needed during take-off, approach and routine hand flying; leave rarely used systems for the keyboard or cockpit.

  • Autopilot disconnect
  • External or cockpit view controls on the hat switch

Button numbers can vary with the active driver and profile, so bind by pressing the physical button rather than copying somebody else’s numbered layout. Check the existing assignments first: a button mapped to two unrelated commands can operate both at once.

What sensitivity and dead-zone settings should I use?

Start with the default response curves and add only enough dead zone to stop unwanted movement around the centre.

A dead zone of roughly 2–5% is a sensible first correction for minor stick or rudder noise, but it is not a required setting. Increase it only until the on-screen input indicator remains centred with your hands off the control. Excessive dead zone makes small corrections difficult during the flare.

If the aircraft feels twitchy, reduce the pitch and roll sensitivity gradually while watching the response graph. Leave the throttle close to linear and verify that it reaches both endpoints. If an axis cannot reach full travel or sits far from centre, use our controller calibration and drift procedure before masking the problem with large dead zones.

Why is my T.Flight HOTAS 4 not detected or working properly?

The location of the failure determines the fix: test Windows first, then the MSFS device profile, and finally the individual aircraft.

  • It is missing from Windows: try another direct USB port, reinstall the proper driver and check the firmware. If joy.cpl cannot see it, MSFS will not see it either.
  • Windows detects it but MSFS does not: close the simulator, reconnect the HOTAS and restart MSFS. Disable any controller-remapping layer that is creating a virtual gamepad or a second copy of the device.
  • The device appears but assignments look blank: select the HOTAS device tile and change the control filter from Assigned to All.
  • An axis moves only from zero to full: remove digital assignments such as Aileron Left, Elevator Up or Increase Throttle and bind the corresponding Axis command.
  • The throttle works backwards: enable Reverse Axis for that assignment. Do not replace it with digital throttle commands.
  • The aircraft moves without input: look for the same axis assigned to a gamepad, mouse or second controller. Also disable piloting assistance that is commanding the aircraft for you.
  • Only one engine responds: replace an engine-specific assignment such as Throttle 1 Axis with the general Throttle Axis command.

A mistake we see constantly is treating the similarly named T.Flight HOTAS X and HOTAS 4 profiles as interchangeable. They are different USB devices; confirm that you are editing the profile belonging to the controller actually shown in MSFS.

Can I use the HOTAS 4 on Xbox or PlayStation 5?

The T.Flight HOTAS 4 is intended for PC and PlayStation, not Xbox consoles.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 uses this HOTAS on PC because that simulator was never released for PlayStation. For Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PS5, connect the HOTAS before launching the simulator and configure it through the console’s Controls screen; a Windows driver is not installed on the console. If recognition fails, update the HOTAS firmware through a PC and reconnect it before starting MSFS 2024.
