Which global scenery add-ons are compatible with X-Plane 12?

X-Plane 12 works with its default Global Scenery plus X-World/X-World Pro overlays, HD Mesh v4, UHD Mesh v4, Ortho4XP tiles and AutoOrtho packages. Compatibility does not mean they all combine: X-World adds objects, while the others can compete as base meshes, so coverage and scenery_packs.ini priority decide what appears.

Does X-Plane 12 already include global scenery?

X-Plane 12 includes default Global Scenery, so an add-on is not required for worldwide flying. It supplies the baseline terrain, roads, buildings, vegetation and airports that custom packages override where their coverage overlaps.

Products described as global scenery are rarely one small, uniform worldwide download. They are usually divided into continents, regions or individual scenery tiles, and some omit remote areas. Compatible X-Plane 12 global scenery add-ons

The main compatible options serve different parts of the scenery system rather than acting as direct substitutes.

An add-on loading without an error is not proof of full X-Plane 12 support. Older packages can display while still using unsuitable water definitions, vegetation, libraries or terrain data.

Is X-World Pro compatible with X-Plane 12?

An X-World Pro release explicitly made for X-Plane 12 is compatible, but it remains primarily an overlay rather than a replacement base mesh. Place it over Global Scenery, HD Mesh, UHD Mesh or orthophoto scenery, and do not install X-Plane 11 and X-Plane 12 editions of the same region together.

Missing buildings or vegetation usually indicate a missing library, a disabled component or incorrect internal layer order. The X-World Pro name alone does not prove that an older package supports X-Plane 12.

Which global scenery option should you choose?

Choose according to the problem you are trying to fix: terrain shape, ground imagery and 3D objects are separate scenery layers.

  • Stay with Global Scenery when you want dependable worldwide coverage without extra storage, setup or streaming.
  • Choose HD Mesh v4 for broad offline terrain coverage and a fallback beneath more detailed regional packages.
  • Choose UHD Mesh v4 in one of its supported regions when terrain definition is more valuable than disk space and loading time.
  • Add X-World or X-World Pro when roads, buildings and vegetation are the weak point. It can sit over either default terrain or orthophotos.
  • Build Ortho4XP tiles when you want permanent local imagery, offline use and control over source imagery, elevation data and tile quality.
  • Use AutoOrtho when you prefer streaming and caching supported regions instead of preparing a large static tile collection in advance.

AutoOrtho vs Ortho4XP: which is better?

AutoOrtho is better for convenient streamed coverage; Ortho4XP is better for offline reliability and control over each finished tile.

Both produce photo-textured base scenery, and neither turns aerial pixels into true seasonal ground imagery. X-Plane may change compatible trees and other overlay objects with the season, but the photographed ground remains the same.

Can HD Mesh, X-World and orthophotos work together?

X-World can work above any compatible base mesh, but two overlapping base meshes cannot be blended into one scenery tile.

X-Plane loads the highest-priority base mesh covering each 1° × 1° DSF tile. If an Ortho4XP tile has priority over HD Mesh, X-Plane uses the Ortho4XP imagery and terrain mesh; it cannot borrow HD Mesh elevation underneath it. The same rule applies to AutoOrtho, UHD Mesh and the default Global Scenery.

  • Airports sit at the top and can exclude lower objects.
  • X-World and other overlays add roads, buildings, forests and objects over the active terrain.
  • Ortho4XP or AutoOrtho supplies the active photo-textured base mesh where installed.
  • UHD Mesh, HD Mesh and Global Scenery provide progressively broader fallback coverage below it.

A separate Ortho4XP overlay can add roads, forests and buildings, but loading it alongside equivalent X-World layers may produce duplicate roads or objects. What scenery_packs.ini order should you use?

Entries nearer the top of scenery_packs.ini have priority over entries below them, but priority matters only where packages cover the same tile or object area.

  1. Close X-Plane before editing. Changes made while the simulator is running can be overwritten when it exits. If using AutoOrtho, start its mount before X-Plane scans or loads the packages.
  2. Put custom airports and local landmarks first. Airports need priority over broad overlays and mesh scenery.
  3. Place X-World and other object overlays next. Keep the package's own component order intact. Do not stack two equivalent road or building layers merely because both load successfully.
  4. Place Ortho4XP and AutoOrtho base-mesh entries below overlays. Put them above UHD and HD Mesh wherever aerial imagery should win.
  5. Place UHD Mesh above HD Mesh. UHD then takes priority in its limited coverage areas while HD remains available elsewhere.
  6. Keep HD Mesh near the bottom. It acts as an offline fallback where no higher orthophoto or UHD tile exists.
  7. Leave default Global Scenery installed. X-Plane uses it automatically where no custom base mesh supplies coverage.

Newly detected folders may be inserted in an unsuitable position, so inspect the file after adding scenery. A line beginning with SCENERY_PACK_DISABLED prevents that package from loading regardless of its position.

Why is global scenery not showing in X-Plane 12?

The most common cause is a higher-priority base mesh covering the same tile, followed by incorrect folder nesting or an AutoOrtho mount that was unavailable when X-Plane loaded the area.

  1. Confirm coverage. Check that the package actually includes the 1° × 1° tile containing your aircraft; regional names do not always imply complete coverage.
  2. Inspect the folder structure. A normal scenery package places Earth nav data inside its package folder under Custom Scenery. An accidental extra folder level prevents detection.
  3. Check that the entry is enabled. Open scenery_packs.ini with X-Plane closed and look for a disabled line, missing entry or wrong priority.
  4. Identify the winning base mesh. Temporarily disable the higher orthophoto, UHD or HD package covering that tile rather than moving unrelated scenery at random.
  5. Read Log.txt. The log in the X-Plane installation folder identifies missing libraries, unreadable DSF files and scenery load failures.
  6. Verify AutoOrtho before launch. Confirm its filesystem mount, cache location and required connection are available before starting the flight.
  7. Remove duplicate editions. Do not load both X-Plane 11 and X-Plane 12 versions of the same X-World region or overlay.

Are X-Plane 11 global scenery packages safe in X-Plane 12?

Some X-Plane 11 scenery loads in X-Plane 12, but older compatibility is package-specific and may come with visual or functional limitations.

HD Mesh v4 and UHD Mesh v4 are established legacy base meshes that can be used in X-Plane 12. Older Ortho4XP tiles often load as well, although they may not contain newer water or coastline data. By contrast, an old X-World edition can depend on assets or layer conventions that should not be mixed with its X-Plane 12 replacement.

Should you delete X-Plane 12 Global Scenery?

Do not delete X-Plane 12 Global Scenery when installing mesh, X-World, Ortho4XP or AutoOrtho scenery.

Custom packages override it only where they provide matching coverage. If an add-on is disabled, unmounted or removed, the default scenery becomes visible again. Keeping that fallback prevents blank or incomplete areas between custom regions and costs no additional scenery-order work.
