How do I set up Xbox or PS controllers in MSFS on PC?

Ian Stephens
In short

Set up an Xbox or PlayStation controller for Microsoft Flight Simulator on PC, map axes, fix missing devices and stop double inputs.

Connect the Xbox or PlayStation controller to Windows before launching Microsoft Flight Simulator, select it in Controls Options, load or create a gamepad profile, bind the flight axes and essential buttons, then tune dead zones. Xbox pads usually work directly; PlayStation pads may need Steam Input in the Steam edition.

Which connection method should you use?

USB is the best connection for initial setup because it removes pairing, battery and wireless-interference problems from the diagnosis.

For Xbox hardware, our USB, Bluetooth and wireless-adapter connection checks cover Windows detection before the simulator is involved. PlayStation users can follow our DualSense pairing and Steam Input instructions.

Controller setup in MSFS 2020 and 2024

The screens differ slightly between Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, but the underlying setup sequence is the same.

  1. Connect the controller before starting MSFS. If it is the first connection, allow Windows to finish detecting it.
  2. Test it in Windows. Press Windows key and R, enter joy.cpl, open the controller’s properties and check that the sticks, triggers and buttons respond. If they fail here, changing MSFS bindings will not help.
  3. Open the simulator’s Controls or Controls Options screen. Select the controller itself, not the keyboard or mouse. It may appear as Xbox Wireless Controller, Wireless Controller, DualSense Wireless Controller or a generic gamepad.
  4. Select or create a profile. Xbox controllers normally receive a usable default layout. If the PlayStation profile is empty, duplicate a preset where possible or create a custom profile. Set the control filter to show all commands; an assigned-only filter hides commands you still need to bind.
  5. Map the primary controls and test them. Watch the on-screen input indicator for each assignment. Move only one stick or trigger when MSFS is scanning, or it may capture the wrong input.
  6. Save and verify the active profile. Load a simple aircraft on the runway, check each control surface externally and confirm that no axis is moving by itself.

If you also have pedals, a throttle or a joystick connected, our full PC device and profile setup explains how to prevent overlapping assignments.

Which controller inputs should you map first?

Map the controls needed to keep the aircraft stable before assigning views, avionics or secondary systems.

  • Left stick: Ailerons Axis and Elevator Axis. Use the axis commands rather than digital left, right, up and down commands.
  • Triggers: left and right rudder. Two independent triggers should use the simulator’s separate left and right rudder inputs or its default gamepad mapping, not a single centred axis unless the controller software exposes one correctly.
  • Face buttons: throttle increase and decrease, wheel brakes and a frequently used action such as landing gear.
  • D-pad: elevator trim up and down, with the remaining directions available for flaps or cockpit views.
  • Right stick: cockpit or external camera movement, plus a button for resetting the view.
  • Menu buttons: pause, camera mode or cursor interaction.

A controller is enough for basic flying, but a mouse remains far better for operating switches, touchscreens and flight-management systems. Keep the keyboard available for commands that do not justify a scarce controller button.

Do not apply a large dead zone immediately. Use the smallest value that stops unwanted movement, then shape the response curve if the aircraft still feels twitchy. Our controller sensitivity and dead-zone guidance covers that tuning separately.

Why is my PlayStation controller missing or showing Xbox buttons?

A missing PlayStation controller usually means Windows has not recognised it, MSFS has no preset for it, or two input systems are competing for the same device.

First connect by USB and check joy.cpl. If Windows sees the controller but the Steam edition of MSFS does not, enable Steam Input for the simulator. Steam Input commonly presents a DualSense or DualShock 4 as an Xbox-compatible XInput device, so Xbox button prompts are then expected.

If MSFS detects the PlayStation controller natively, try that mode before enabling emulation. Do not leave both native input and Steam Input active if each produces a separate controller entry. The Microsoft Store or Xbox app edition does not have the same title-level Steam Input option, so use the native device entry and create an in-simulator profile when necessary.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 was never released on PlayStation, but PlayStation controllers can still operate as Windows input devices. MSFS 2024 has a PS5 release, yet that does not guarantee that its PC version will display PlayStation button symbols for every connection method.

How do you fix double inputs, drift or reversed controls?

Most controller faults come from duplicate bindings, an incorrect command type or a profile that is not actually active.

  • Double movement: remove the same flight axis from every device except the one intended to control it. If a PlayStation pad appears twice, use either native input or Steam Input, not both.
  • Constant roll or pitch: test for stick drift in joy.cpl, then add only enough dead zone to hold the indicator at centre.
  • Reversed elevator or throttle: use the axis reversal option instead of assigning opposite digital commands.
  • Controls list appears empty: change the filter from assigned controls to all controls.
  • Rudder stays deflected: remove any duplicate rudder-axis assignment and check that each trigger returns fully when released.
  • Bindings disappeared: confirm that MSFS selected your custom controller profile rather than reverting to its default profile.

The mistake we see most often is rebuilding every assignment before checking the active device and profile. Verify those two items first; they account for many apparently lost or broken controller setups.
